# A Generator Under Load Tells The Truth

Starting a generator proves fuel and ignition at idle. Nothing more. The faults that matter appear only when the unit carries close to its rated output for half an hour, which is why a monthly unloaded run leaves a coach unprepared for the first hot afternoon without a pedestal.

## The start button proves the smallest part of the system

An owner presses the button, the unit cranks, catches, settles into a steady note, and the exercise is logged as done. That sequence proves a charged starting battery, a working start circuit, fuel reaching the carburettor or the injectors, ignition, and enough compression to run with no load on it. Those are real things and they are the easy half. What has not been tested is whether the unit can produce clean power at close to its rated output, hold it for long enough to reach operating temperature, and cool itself while doing so.

The gap between those two states is where almost every unpleasant surprise lives. Coaches arrive here every summer with the same story: the generator ran fine all spring, and then on the first genuinely hot afternoon it would not carry the air conditioning, or it carried it for twenty minutes and shut down. Nothing changed in the unit between spring and summer. The load changed, and the load is the part the monthly exercise never applied.

## Applying loads in the order that finds problems

A useful test adds load in steps and watches what happens at each step, because different faults show up at different points. Start with the unit warmed up rather than cold, since a cold engine hides a fuel restriction that a hot one reveals. Bring on one air conditioner and listen to what the engine does as the compressor starts. Add a second. Add resistive load, a water heater element or a microwave, which behaves differently from a motor because it draws steadily instead of surging. Then hold everything on for long enough that heat becomes a factor.

Watching rather than measuring still tells an owner a great deal. An engine that dips and recovers briskly at each step has a governor doing its job. One that dips and stays low, or hunts up and down without settling, has a fuel or governor problem. Exhaust that puffs black at each load step is running rich. A unit that carries everything beautifully for fifteen minutes and then loses output has a cooling or a heat related electrical fault, and that specific pattern is the single most common summer complaint we hear.

## What the appliances are telling you about output quality

Owners have no meter on the generator output and they do have a coach full of instruments. An air conditioner that runs but never gets cold, a microwave that takes noticeably longer than it does on shore power, a converter that stops charging while the generator is running, lights that pulse in time with the engine note: each of those is a report about the quality of the power rather than the quantity. Low voltage under load, or output frequency drifting off where it should be, produces exactly that set of complaints and produces them together.

The reason it matters is that low quality output damages things. An air conditioner compressor asked to start on low voltage draws heavily and heats its windings, and doing that repeatedly across a season is how a generator fault turns into an air conditioner replacement. A converter or an inverter charger on unstable input can fault, or in older units simply run hot. Owners who describe the appliance symptoms accurately often get the generator diagnosed before anybody touches the appliance, which is the order that costs less.

## A monthly hour that is actually worth the fuel

The standard advice to exercise a generator monthly is right and usually followed badly. An unloaded run for ten minutes achieves very little: it does not get the unit to full operating temperature, it does not burn the moisture out of the crankcase or the exhaust, and on a gasoline unit it can leave more unburnt fuel behind than it consumes. A useful exercise session runs the unit at a real load, at least half of rated output, for long enough to come fully up to temperature and hold there. On most coaches that means running the air conditioning for the session rather than nothing at all.

Two habits pair with it. Note the date and what the unit did, in the same place every time, so a slow change is visible instead of being remembered wrongly. Then look at the exhaust and the mounts while it is running, because a coastal coach loses exhaust tubing from the inside out and the smell of exhaust near a bedroom is a safety matter rather than a maintenance one. An owner who exercises properly and writes it down arrives with better information than most diagnostic sessions produce in their first hour.

- At least half of rated output, held until the unit is fully warm
- Once a month, on a date you keep rather than when you remember
- The same log every time: date, load, how it started, what it sounded like
- A look at the exhaust path and the mounts while it is running
- Fuel stabiliser on a gasoline unit that sits between sessions

## Writing down what the unit did, and when it did it

Intermittent generator faults are expensive to chase precisely because they are intermittent, and a shop cannot bill for waiting. A record turns that around. If the log shows the unit shutting down after twenty minutes on hot afternoons and running for hours on cool mornings, the target is heat, and a technician goes to the temperature sensing and the cooling path first instead of working through a general list. If it shows a gradual loss of output across a year, the target is different again.

Hours on the meter matter as much as dates. A unit with very low hours for its age has a different set of likely faults than a high hour unit: sitting causes fuel system and corrosion problems, running causes wear. Bring the hour meter reading, the service history if any exists, and any part somebody has already fitted. Diagnostic time bills at $285 an hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorised repair, and a good log routinely keeps the diagnosis inside that hour rather than beyond it.

## The arithmetic on a small unit in an older trailer

Generator service runs $400 to $8,500 plus across two to thirty five hours, and the top of that band is where an honest conversation belongs. On a diesel coach with a large unit, repair almost always wins, because the replacement cost and the installation work are both substantial and the unit is designed to be serviced. On a small gasoline unit in an older travel trailer, a rebuild that touches the fuel system, the stator and the exhaust can pass what the whole trailer is worth, and it can also pass the cost of a portable unit and a proper inlet.

We would rather lose the job than write that estimate without saying so. The deciding factors are the unit's hours, whether the fault is one system or three, and how many more seasons the owner plans to keep the trailer. Where the answer is a portable unit instead, the work becomes an inlet, a transfer arrangement and a secure rack, which is a smaller ticket and the right one. Owners are usually relieved to be told, and the ones who are not at least know what they are choosing.
