# Ceramic Coating for Laguna Niguel owners

A ceramic coating is a thin sacrificial layer bonded over whatever surface it finds, so correction comes first and is most of the bill. Gelcoat, painted fiberglass and vinyl each take it differently. Application on a coach runs $1,200 to $6,500, ten to sixty hours.

## Correction first, coating second, and where the money actually goes

A coating is a thin layer of silica chemistry that bonds to the surface it is applied to and then wears out slowly in place of that surface. It cannot improve whatever sits underneath it. The sequence is therefore fixed: assess, decontaminate, correct, then coat, and on most coaches the correction is the larger half of the invoice. Paint correction and polish alone runs $500 to $4,000, five to forty hours. Coating application runs $1,200 to $6,500, ten to sixty hours.

Owners are often surprised by that split, expecting the coating itself to be the expense. Product cost is minor. What is being bought is the hours of cutting, refining and panel preparation that decide whether the coating locks in gloss or locks in a haze of buffer trails. A coating applied over an unprepared surface becomes a permanent record of exactly how that surface looked on the day somebody rushed it.

## Gelcoat, painted fiberglass and vinyl each take a coating differently

Gelcoat is porous, and once oxidised it is chalky as well. Getting a coating to bond means cutting back to live resin, so a gelcoat coach nearly always needs more correction hours than a painted one. Painted fiberglass with healthy clear coat corrects more predictably, though film thickness sets the ceiling: where the gauge reads thin, the plan drops to a light polish and the coating goes over a surface that is clean rather than perfect.

Vinyl cannot be compounded at all. A wrapped food truck or a fleet van gets decontamination, a solvent wipe the wrap manufacturer permits, and a coating formulated for vinyl, which behaves differently and does not last as long as one sitting on gelcoat. Matte wrap needs a matte specific product, because a gloss coating turns a matte finish patchy and there is no undoing that. Where a wrap is already lifting at an edge or a seam, coating it is money spent on a panel that needs rewrapping instead.

## Why a coach is not simply a large car

Square footage is the whole difference. Two sidewalls on a forty foot coach, plus a roof, two caps, a skirt and every compartment door, add up to a surface area that takes days to correct properly, and each stage has to be repeated across all of it. That is why a coach coating lands between ten and sixty hours while a car is an afternoon, and why an owner quoted a car price for RV work is being quoted for something else.

Access changes it further. Upper sidewall and roof work needs staging rather than a reach over a fender, so hours accumulate in movement as well as in polishing. Vertical panels also hold product differently from a car's horizontal hood, and a coating flashing too quickly on a hot forty foot wall leaves high spots which have to be levelled while they are still workable. Panel sectioning, working order and shop temperature are planning decisions, not afterthoughts.

## Decontamination, panel prep and the tape line

Preparation is measured in stages rather than in effort. Wash, chemical decontamination for iron and for organic contamination, a mechanical decontamination pass to lift bonded material the chemicals leave behind, correction, then a panel wipe that removes every trace of polishing oil. That last wipe is the step people skip, and skipping it is expensive: a coating bonded to residue rather than to the surface delaminates in sheets instead of wearing evenly, and taking a failed coating back off is another round of correction hours.

Decals and graphics get their own decision. Old vinyl graphics on a coach are often shrunken and lifted at the edges, and correcting up to them lifts them further. Either the graphics get replaced first, or they get taped and worked around, and taping means the panel finish stops at the tape line. That is a choice made at the estimate, standing outside in daylight with the owner present, rather than discovered at pickup.

- Iron and tar removal before any mechanical work, so contamination is not dragged across a panel.
- Trim, seals, decals and Eternabond edges taped, since coating on a rubber seal cannot be corrected off.
- Panel wipe with the coating maker's own prep solution, then a residue check under raking light.
- Coating applied panel by panel with the levelling time the product specifies, not the time the schedule wants.
- Every panel photographed after correction and again before coating, into the file.

## Cure time in the booth and the days it cannot get wet

Coating chemistry cures in stages. Flash and levelling happen in minutes, structural cure over the following day, and full hardness across a period of days after that. Through the cure the vehicle stays in a controlled bay rather than outside, because dust settling into a curing coating is in the coating permanently, and a marine layer dew event on a partially cured panel leaves water spotting that has to be corrected off and recoated.

Practically, a coach is here longer than the labour hours suggest and cannot get wet for several days after it leaves. No washing during that window, no rain if it can be avoided, and no sprinkler overspray in a storage lot. Owners planning a trip around a coating appointment should plan the trip after the cure rather than for the afternoon the coach is collected, which is the one scheduling detail people regret ignoring.

## What a coating does against UV and salt film, and what it does not

A coating changes surface energy so contamination has less to hold onto. Salt film out of coastal air rinses away with far less mechanical scrubbing, which matters because scrubbing is what puts scratches into gelcoat in the first place. Bug residue and sealant streaking release earlier. Water beads and sheets, so a coach dries with fewer spots. Gloss reads deeper because the surface is flatter and reflects more cleanly.

What it does not do is stop ultraviolet damage. Pigment underneath still fades, gelcoat still chalks eventually, and a coating slows that process rather than halting it. It adds no meaningful impact resistance, so rock chips, highway debris and a scrape against a storage lot post all do exactly what they were going to do. It does not seal a hairline crack, it does not stop a leak, and it will not hide swirl marks. A coating makes a corrected surface easier to keep, and nothing beyond that.

## A coating over failed clear coat locks the failure in

Clear coat failure is delamination between layers, and it advances from an edge or from somewhere film was already thin. Putting a hard coating over that does not arrest it. Underneath, the clear keeps releasing from the base, and when it finally lifts it takes the coating with it in a sheet, which looks worse than the original failure and costs considerably more to put right.

A coach with clear coat lifting at a roof line or a cap seam therefore gets an honest answer instead of a coating: that panel needs refinish work, which is body and paint labour at $210 an hour, and coating comes afterwards if it is still wanted then. Turning the job down is not a sales tactic. Coating a failing panel is a total loss of the money spent on it, and writing the refinish estimate nobody wanted to hear about is the more useful thing to do.

## Reapplication and what maintenance actually looks like

Longevity claims in this corner of the trade deserve suspicion. A coating on a coach that lives outdoors in coastal sun, gets washed with whatever a storage lot has available and sees highway miles does not perform like a coating on a garaged car. Realistically, expect the top of the coating to want a maintenance service after a season or two, and full reapplication considerably sooner than the number printed on the bottle implies.

Maintenance is what actually sets lifespan. Wash with a product carrying no gloss enhancer or wax in it, keep the coach away from a brush style truck wash, and have a decontamination and topping service done periodically rather than waiting until the coating stops beading. Roof and horizontal surfaces wear first, since they take the sun straight on. Anyone wanting to know whether a coating is still working should watch how water behaves after a rinse, not how the coach looks dry.
