# Detailing and Reconditioning for Laguna Niguel owners

Detail and reconditioning is surface work with no collision behind it: compounding oxidised gelcoat, polishing clear coat, restoring headlight lenses, cleaning a roof inside a sealant cycle, treating seals and fabric, and interior odour work. Detail labour is posted at $95 an hour, a full detail $500 to $3,500.

## What surface work reaches and what it leaves alone

Surface work removes material. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the boundary matters so much. Compounding takes off the dead top layer of oxidised gelcoat, or the fine scratch pattern sitting in clear coat, and what is underneath comes back with gloss. Nothing is added. A panel with clear coat lifting at an edge, a sidewall bubbling with delamination, or paint gone thin from somebody's previous polish has nothing left to remove, and surface work on that panel makes it worse rather than better.

What it does reach is substantial: chalked gelcoat across the lower half of a sidewall, water spotting, oxidised aluminium trim, yellowed headlight lenses, roof film, tired rubber seals, awning fabric, and interiors that smell like whatever spent the last two seasons living in them. Detail labour is posted at $95 an hour and a full interior and exterior detail runs $500 to $3,500, five to thirty five hours. Those hours are almost entirely a function of how far the paint went before anybody intervened.

## Chalked gelcoat and the black streak that is not dirt

Gelcoat is pigmented polyester resin rather than paint, and it fails differently. Ultraviolet light breaks the resin at the surface and leaves a chalky, porous layer that hazes, holds dirt and comes off on a white towel. On a coach stored uncovered near the coast, that layer gets deep enough that a single polish stage only lightens it. Two cutting stages, wet, with a wool or heavy microfibre pad are what actually reach live resin, and even then a panel that spent years facing south finishes a shade different from the one that faced a wall.

That black streak running down a sidewall under the roof edge is not dirt and it will not wash off. It is plasticiser leaching out of roof sealants, Dicor lap sealant and butyl among them, carried down the wall by rain and then absorbed into porous chalked gelcoat. Scrubbing polishes it further in. Getting rid of it means compounding it out of the gelcoat and then dealing with the roof producing it, because a coach that keeps making streaks has them back after the first serious rain.

## Film thickness gets measured before a machine polisher comes out

On any painted panel, a gauge comes out before a polisher does. Coaches are rarely wearing only factory paint: a repainted cap, a resprayed sidewall from an old claim, a blended panel left over from a bumper repair. Readings vary widely across one vehicle, and a low reading changes the plan from a cutting compound on a wool pad to a foam pad and a fine polish. Where a reading is very low, the honest answer is that the panel gets cleaned, sealed and left alone.

Edges, crown lines and the raised ribs on a fiberglass cap carry the least film anywhere on the vehicle, and they are exactly where a rotary in a hurry burns through. Burning through clear is not a detail problem afterwards. It becomes refinish work at $210 an hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour on top, so an hour saved on the polish turns into a day in the booth. Panel by panel readings go into the file alongside the intake photographs.

- Film readings taken at each panel, at the edges and at crown lines, before a machine touches the vehicle.
- A test section polished first and inspected under shop light and again in daylight.
- Wet cutting on gelcoat, foam pad and fine polish on thin clear coat.
- No rotary on an edge that reads low. Machine choice follows the gauge, not the schedule.

## Headlight lenses, hard coat failure and a repair that holds

A modern headlight lens is polycarbonate with a factory ultraviolet hard coat sprayed over it. The polycarbonate itself yellows slowly. The hard coat is what fails first, crazing into a fine spiderweb and then clouding, and the damage lives in the top few thousandths of an inch. Restoration means taking that failed coat off completely by wet sanding, stepping down through progressively finer grades to a very fine finish, and then putting a new ultraviolet barrier back over bare polycarbonate.

That last step is the whole job. A lens which is only sanded and polished looks perfect for a season, then yellows faster than it did the first time, because polycarbonate with no hard coat is directly exposed. A bottle of paste from a parts store does the sanding half and skips the protection half, which is the honest reason those results disappoint by the following summer. A sprayed two part clear or a wipe on ultraviolet cured coating puts a real barrier back on. Headlight restoration runs $500 to $900, five to nine hours, and on a Class A these are large composite housings rather than car sized lenses.

Haze on the inside of a housing is a different problem entirely. A failed housing seal lets moisture in, and the film then sits on a surface no polisher can reach. That gets diagnosed rather than sanded, and the answer is a housing, not a restoration. Telling an owner that before taking money for a polish is the difference between a repair and a sale.

## Where a detail stops and paint correction starts on the estimate

These are separate line items, and confusing them is where owner expectations go wrong. Detail is wash, decontamination, one polish stage, dressing and interior work. Paint correction is measurement plus multi stage cutting and refining, aimed at removing defects instead of masking them, and it runs $500 to $4,000, five to forty hours on its own. A coach carrying heavy oxidation needs correction, and writing it as a detail on the paperwork only sets up an unpleasant invoice conversation at pickup.

Carriers pay for clean up after a repair, and occasionally for correction where a refinish repair needs it to blend properly. They do not pay to recondition a coach that arrived oxidised. Where an owner wants a whole vehicle brought back and the clear coat is already lifting, the accurate estimate is a refinish estimate at body and paint rates, not a correction estimate. Surface work cannot fix failed clear coat, and no product sold anywhere changes that fact.

## Roof cleaning inside a sealant inspection cycle

EPDM and TPO membranes chalk by design. The top layer sacrifices itself and washes off, which is why white residue on a hand is normal and a black streak on a sidewall is not. Cleaning is mild detergent, a soft brush and water, worked in sections. Petroleum based cleaners have no business on EPDM because they swell and soften the membrane, and a citrus degreaser left to dwell on a seam does the sealant no favours either.

Since somebody is already up there, the roof gets photographed rather than merely cleaned. Lap sealant condition at every seam, the flanges around vents and fans, skylight edges, antenna and air conditioner bases, both cap transitions, and any spot where a previous repair laid a bead of the wrong sealant over Eternabond tape. Roof recoat and reseal is its own job at $750 to $4,500, four to twenty hours, and learning a coach needs it during a detail beats learning it during a water damage teardown.

## Rubber seals, awning fabric and interior air

Rubber gets treated, not dressed to a shine. Slide wiper seals, bulb seals and D seals stay pliable under a treatment containing no petroleum distillates, and a glossy slide seal usually means somebody used a product that will harden it. Window and door gaskets get the same handling. Awning fabric, Dometic and Solera among the common ones, gets a fabric safe wash and a soft brush, never a pressure washer near the stitching or the roller seam, since a blown stitch line turns a wash into an awning fabric replacement.

Interior odour work stays honest about its limits. An ozone cycle, run with the coach sealed and unoccupied for a number of hours, breaks down smoke, cooking and animal odour molecules that upholstery cleaning alone leaves behind. What ozone cannot do is dry a subfloor. An odour returning within a week is water, and it needs a moisture survey rather than a second ozone cycle. Upholstery, carpet and hard surfaces get cleaned first, because ozone run on a dirty interior mostly treats the smell of dirt.

- Slide seals cleaned and treated with a product carrying no petroleum distillates.
- Awning fabric washed by hand and inspected at the stitching and the roller seam.
- Ozone cycles run on a sealed, unoccupied coach, after upholstery and hard surfaces are already clean.
- Water spotting on glass and gelcoat addressed before anything is sealed, since a sealant locks it in.
