# Paint Correction and Polishing for Laguna Niguel owners

Paint correction removes the top few microns of a finish to take out oxidation, swirl and light scratching, then polishes it back to gloss. $500 to $4,000, five to forty hours on a coach. Correction only works while there is film left to remove, which is why measurement comes first.

## Measuring film thickness before a pad touches the panel

Correction is subtractive. Every pass removes material and nothing puts it back, so the first operation is measurement rather than polishing. A thickness gauge reads film across the body in a grid: roof, upper sidewall, lower sidewall, caps, slide faces, and any panel that looks like it has been refinished before. Those readings show where there is room to work and where there is not, and on one coach they routinely differ by a factor of two from panel to panel.

Gelcoat complicates the reading, since eddy current gauges expect a metal substrate and a coach is mostly laminate. On fiberglass we use an ultrasonic gauge, or where that is impractical, a test area worked to the target finish and inspected before the rest of the body is committed. Either way the numbers go in the file with photographs. A shop that starts cutting a thirty year old coach without measuring anything is gambling with the only gelcoat that coach will ever have.

## Chalked gelcoat and failed clear look alike and are not

Two dull coaches can need completely different answers. Chalked gelcoat is pigmented resin whose surface has broken down: it looks white and powdery, it wipes to a chalk residue on a cloth, and there is normally solid, coloured gelcoat directly underneath. Correction genuinely fixes that, sometimes dramatically. Failed clear is a film letting go of its base coat: it looks cloudy or milky, it shows sharp edged patches with a boundary you can feel, and it will often peel if you tape it and pull.

The distinction decides the whole conversation. Cutting chalked gelcoat exposes good material. Cutting failed clear removes what remains of the clear and exposes base coat, which has no UV protection and fades fast. A polish over failing clear buys a few weeks of gloss and then the patches return larger. When we find failing clear the recommendation is refinish, and losing the correction booking is better than taking money for a job that unravels by autumn.

## The point where correction stops being the cheaper answer

The crossover between correction and refinish is arithmetic and it is worth doing out loud. Correction on a large coach at the detail rate of $95 per hour can run to forty hours, which puts a serious correction near the top of its band. Correction still wins decisively while gelcoat is sound, because it costs a fraction of paint and takes days instead of weeks. Correction loses the moment much of the body carries failed film, since you would be paying to polish something that has to be painted regardless.

Mixed cases are common and get a mixed answer: correct the sound sidewalls, refinish the front cap that has taken the most UV and stone damage. Two operations, one visit, and considerably cheaper than either extreme. What we will not do is correct a coach and then quietly recommend a repaint three months later. The measurement session settles which conversation we are having, and it happens before you authorise anything.

## Wet sand, compound, polish, in that order and no other

Order is not negotiable and skipping a step always shows. Wash and decontaminate first, including a clay or mechanical decontamination to lift bonded fallout and salt, because dragging grit under a cutting pad puts in deeper marks than the ones being removed. Wet sanding comes next where it is needed, with fine grades on a hard block, and only where oxidation or texture is beyond what a compound can level. Compound after that, to remove the sanding marks. Polish last, to remove the compound haze.

Each stage leaves marks the following stage removes, which is why running a compound with no finishing polish gives a coach that looks brilliant in the shop and hazy in the sun. On a large body the sequence is worked panel by panel with a defined overlap, and each panel gets inspected in direct light before the next one starts. Pads get changed constantly, since a saturated pad stops cutting and starts smearing product around.

## A coach that has been polished thin cannot be polished again

Gelcoat and clear are both finite, and a coach corrected aggressively every couple of years by whoever was cheapest has already spent its allowance. The symptoms are recognisable: gauge readings well under what the rest of the body shows, colour going translucent at panel edges and on high spots, a faint pattern of the laminate visible through the surface on a cap, and paint that will not hold gloss for a season no matter what gets applied.

Telling an owner their coach cannot be polished again is the least popular sentence in this part of the shop and it is regularly the correct one. Once the laminate shows through the gelcoat, the next cut goes into it, and then you are into filler and primer, which is a refinish. The right answer on a thin body is protection rather than correction: a light finishing polish at most, then a coating, then washing habits that stop making it worse.

## Salt film, marine layer and what the coastal sun does to a roof

South Orange County is a specific set of conditions and coaches wear them in a specific pattern. Marine layer deposits a fine salt film overnight that dries onto horizontal surfaces. Sun burns through by midday and bakes it on. Santa Ana wind then drives dust and grit across a surface with salt already sitting on it. Roofs, awning rails, cap tops and the upper third of the sidewall go first, and they go much faster than anything on the shaded side of the same vehicle.

Our correction quotes are rarely uniform across a body for that reason. A coach stored uncovered near the water in Laguna Niguel usually needs real work on the roof and front cap and very little on the lower panels. A rinse habit matters more here than almost anywhere: clean water over the roof and upper sidewall after a run near the coast lifts the salt before the next day's sun bakes it into the surface. Covered storage does more for a finish than anything sold in a bottle.

## Ceramic coating over corrected paint

A coating is a sacrificial layer, not an upgrade to the paint underneath it. Applied over corrected gelcoat or clear, a silica based coating cross links into a hard, hydrophobic film that resists chalking, releases salt film with a rinse instead of a scrub, and holds gloss considerably longer than a wax. On a body that has just been corrected or refinished it is the sensible next step, because it protects the material you have just paid somebody to remove.

Application is a controlled process with a real failure mode. The surface must be corrected, then panel wiped to remove every trace of polishing oil, and the panels have to sit in a workable temperature and humidity range. Coating applied over residual oil bonds to the oil and lets go in sheets. Coating laid on too heavily, or left too long before levelling, flashes into high spots that then have to be polished off, which means cutting the paint you were protecting. Coach sized coating work is quoted separately from correction, sits above the correction band, and needs the vehicle to stay inside for the initial cure.

## Questions

### Does paint correction remove scratches or only hide them?

Removes them, which is exactly why it has a limit. Correction levels the clear coat down to the base of the defect, so anything shallower than the clear thickness disappears permanently and anything deeper than it cannot be corrected at all without refinishing. Run a fingernail across the scratch: if it catches, the defect has reached the base and needs paint. Correction and polish bands $500 to $4,000 across five to 40 hours at the $95 detail rate.

### How many hours does paint correction take on a 38 foot coach?

Twenty to 40 hours for a full multi stage correction, less for a single stage polish. Surface area is the reason: a 38 foot unit has several times the panel area of a car and adds vertical ladder work, awning rails, roof edges and cap curves that no machine covers quickly. Detail labour is $95 per hour. Owners who want the gloss without the whole shell corrected usually start with the caps and the front third.
