# Paint and Refinishing for Laguna Niguel owners

Paint and refinishing covers colour matching, sealing, spraying and clearing on RVs, vans and commercial bodies. A full refinish runs $5,000 to $35,000 and up, forty to two hundred and fifty hours, depending on scheme complexity, substrate condition and how much of the body comes apart first.

## Single stage, base and clear, and multi stage pearl

Three refinish systems cover nearly everything that comes through the booth, and the choice sets both the hour count and how the repair ages. Single stage puts colour and gloss in one product. It sprays fast, it is cheap to repair later, and it is what a great many white commercial bodies and older coaches wore when they left the factory. Base and clear separates pigment from protection, which buys UV performance and lets us cut and polish the clear without touching colour. Multi stage pearl adds a translucent mid coat, and the mid coat is where the trouble lives, because the final colour depends on how many passes of pearl went over the base.

An owner who wants the cheapest correct answer on a plain white box truck is usually right to want single stage. An owner with a pearl scheme on a diesel pusher has no cheap answer, because a three stage repair has to reproduce a coat count nobody wrote down. Test panels get sprayed before any pearl panel is touched, and that is one of the honest reasons a pearl coach sits nearer the top of the refinish band than a solid white one does.

## Gelcoat and painted fiberglass behave differently under a sander

Fiberglass arrives in two states and they are not interchangeable. Gelcoat is pigmented resin, part of the laminate, thick, and it chalks rather than peels when the sun gets to it. Painted fiberglass is a film sitting on a primed surface, and when it fails it fails by letting go in sheets, usually starting at a seam or a fastener. Sanding into gelcoat is safe to a point and leaves an excellent mechanical key. Sanding into paint over gelcoat can undercut an edge and start a peel that runs a long way past the area you meant to repair.

Telling them apart takes half a minute with a block in a hidden area, and getting it wrong costs days. A chalked gelcoat cap can often be flatted and refinished directly. A cap that was already repainted once, badly, has to come back to a sound layer, and on some coaches that means the whole cap gets stripped rather than keyed. We check before quoting, because that one fact can double the hours on a cap refinish.

## Choosing sealer over another skim of filler

Filler is a shaping product and sealer is an isolating product, and reaching for the wrong one is the most common shortcut in cheap refinish work. Where a panel has a shallow low spot, a coarse scratch pattern, or a repaired area with three materials meeting, a sealer coat gives a uniform, non porous, single colour surface for colour to sit on. Another skim of filler over the same area gives you something that reads flat in the booth and sinks a shadow into the paint six weeks later as it finishes curing.

Filler depth has a working limit and we hold to it. Deeper than a stack of business cards over any single point means the substrate needs pulling, sectioning or replacing rather than burying. Sealer also solves colour holdout, which matters on reds and on any thin metallic where primer showing through changes how the final colour reads. Skipping sealer to save two hours of paint time is a saving that comes back as a repaint.

## Reading the panel instead of trusting the paint code

A paint code tells you what left the assembly plant. It does not tell you what a coach parked in Orange County sun for a decade looks like now, and the gap is not subtle: whites go warm, reds lose their blue and drift toward orange, silvers go flat as the metallic settles and the binder chalks. Matching from a code alone produces a technically correct panel that reads as a different colour in daylight. Matching happens on the panel, in front of the vehicle, against the substrate we are actually going to spray.

The procedure is mechanical and repeatable. The area gets washed, clayed and polished first, so we are matching paint and not the film of road grime and coastal salt sitting on it. A variant deck then comes out and gets held against the cleaned panel in daylight. A spray-out card follows, made with the gun, pressure and reducer chosen for that day, cleared, and compared to the panel wet and dry. Only then does colour go anywhere near the vehicle.

## Graphics, decals and full body paint schemes

Two entirely different things get called graphics. A printed vinyl set is a bonded film that comes off with heat and a plastic blade and gets replaced with a reproduced print. A painted scheme is colour under clear, laid out with tape and masking, and it cannot be peeled or reprinted. Which one your coach wears decides whether damage across the swoop on the side is a decal order or a masked multi colour respray. Owners regularly assume theirs is painted when it is film, and the film answer is normally the cheaper one.

Reproduction is the hard part on an older body. Manufacturers discontinue decal kits, and once the kit is gone the honest options are a scan and reprint taken from an undamaged section of the original, a redraw, or a redesign. A reprint from a sun faded original matches the coach rather than the catalogue, which is usually what an owner actually wants. Layout work, painted or printed, is quoted by the hour like everything else, and a symmetrical scheme crossing a slide face, a seam and a compartment door takes longer to mask than it takes to spray.

## Cure schedule on a body that will not fit a car booth

Cure is a schedule, not a wait. Clear reaches tack, then handling strength, then full cross link, and each of those stages has a temperature and a time attached to it. A car booth bakes a bumper cover in a short cycle and the vehicle leaves the same day. A forty foot body carries an enormous mass of aluminium, steel and laminate that takes heat up slowly and gives it back slowly, so the bake follows the panel rather than the clock on the wall.

In practice a coach in refinish occupies the booth for a block of days rather than a shift, and reassembly does not begin the moment the gun stops. Rushing that step produces soft clear that prints a mask line, a fastener that dimples the finish because it was torqued into paint which had not cross linked, and a seal bedded into a surface still gassing off. The refinish stage on our day axis runs day eleven to twenty on real jobs for exactly these reasons.

## What decides where a refinish lands in its band

Four things, in order of how much they matter. Substrate condition first: sound gelcoat that flats out is a key and shoot, failed paint over gelcoat is a strip, and a strip can add dozens of hours before any colour is mixed. Scheme complexity second: one solid colour is one masking job, a three colour scheme with a pearl accent is three masking jobs plus a test panel session. Disassembly third, because awnings, lights, mirrors, badges, rub rail and compartment hardware come off rather than get masked around, and a coach carries a great deal of it. Size last, which surprises people, because size is the one variable nobody can negotiate.

That is also the order in which a quote grows after teardown. A supplement on a refinish job is usually substrate, discovered when the first flat pass exposes an old repair somebody buried under filler and pearl. It gets photographed and written rather than painted over, so the file shows the carrier precisely what was found and when. Owners who want a number they can rely on should expect the strip and flat stage to confirm or move the estimate, and should not authorise a fixed figure on a body whose history nobody knows.

### How are faded decals and graphics replaced?

The old vinyl comes off with heat and a plastic razor, the adhesive residue is removed chemically, then the surface underneath is assessed. That surface is the problem: gel coat masked by a decal for twelve years has not faded at the same rate as the gel coat beside it, so a new decal in the original outline hides the difference and a new decal in a different outline reveals it. Decal and graphics replacement bands $500 to $5,500 across three to 25 hours.

### Can oxidised gel coat be brought back without painting?

Often, and it is the cheaper answer by a wide margin. Oxidation is a dead surface layer, so compounding removes it and reveals sound gel coat beneath, then polish and sealant hold the result. What decides feasibility is thickness: gel coat that has chalked through to the laminate has nothing left to cut. Paint correction and polish bands $500 to $4,000 across five to 40 hours, against $5,000 to $35,000 or more for a repaint.
