# Spot Repair and Blend Matching for Laguna Niguel owners

Spot repair and blend matching fixes damage on part of a panel and carries colour into the panels beside it so no edge shows. Typically $500 to $5,000 and up, four to twenty five hours. The blend, not the repair, decides whether you can find the work in daylight.

## Colour comes off the vehicle, never off a chip chart alone

Colour on a used vehicle is a local property rather than a global one. A single white coach can carry three measurably different whites: the roof, which took the most UV, the upper sidewall, and the panels living in shade under an awning. Matching a rear cap repair against the front cap produces a panel that is correct against the wrong reference. Match happens against the panel being repaired and the two next to it, cleaned first, because road film and salt haze read as a colour shift all by themselves.

Factory codes still matter, just not as the answer. A code narrows the search to a family and gives us the variant deck to work from, and manufacturers publish several variants for one code precisely because production drifted. From there it is comparison, in daylight, against the cleaned panel. Camera based matching tools help on a solid colour and mislead on a coarse metallic, which makes them a starting point rather than a verdict.

## The spray-out card, and why it gets cleared before anyone judges it

A spray-out card is a test panel sprayed with the actual mix, through the actual gun, at the actual pressure, with the reducer chosen for that day's temperature. Change any one of those and the colour changes. The same mix through a different tip lays metallic differently, and a fast reducer on a warm morning puts flake down at a different orientation than a slow one. Judging a mix from the cup, or from a printed chip, skips every one of those variables.

The card gets cleared before anybody decides anything, because clear shifts every colour it goes over: it deepens, it warms, and it changes how a metallic reads. A match judged on uncleared base and then cleared is a coin toss. Cards get checked wet and dry, held flat against the panel, then held at the angle the panel actually sits at on the vehicle, which on a coach sidewall is vertical and on a cap is closer to horizontal.

## Metallic orientation, flop, and why a match can fail from one angle only

Flop is the change in a metallic colour as the viewing angle moves off perpendicular, and it is where most failed matches live. Aluminium flake in the base coat lies down at an angle set by spray technique, film thickness and how wet the coat went on. Lay it flatter and the panel looks lighter face on and darker from the side. Lay it looser and the reverse happens. Pigment can be exactly right and a panel still obviously wrong from ten feet at an angle.

Correcting it is technique rather than tint. Gun distance, air pressure, overlap and the drop coat all move orientation, which is why the card and the panel have to be sprayed the same way, and why a repair on a silver or a metallic grey carries more hours than the same repair on a solid white. Vans and modern commercial fleets are increasingly metallic, so this stopped being purely a coach problem some years ago. An owner inspecting a metallic repair should walk the panel from both ends rather than standing square to it.

## Where a blend has to start and where it is allowed to stop

A blend is a controlled fade and it needs somewhere to go. Colour is carried out past the repair into undamaged paint, thinning until it disappears, and then the whole area is cleared to a natural boundary: a body line, a panel edge, a seam, rub rail, the edge of a graphic. Clear cannot be faded convincingly in the middle of a flat expanse, so the clear boundary decides how large the job is, and the vehicle's geometry decides where that boundary can be.

On a coach sidewall the nearest natural boundary can be a long way from the damage, which is exactly why a small scuff on a large flat wall is not a small job. On a Sprinter a body line runs the length of the side and gives clear somewhere to stop. On a box truck the panel joints do the same work. An owner who understands that one relationship stops being surprised by the size of a refinish line on an estimate.

## The refinish line an adjuster questions most often

Blend into an adjacent undamaged panel is the most questioned line on a cosmetic estimate, and the objection is understandable: that panel is not damaged, so why is it being painted. Our answer gets written and photographed rather than argued on the phone. The panel is being painted because the alternative is a visible transition on a vehicle its owner has to look at every day, and because a repair is only finished when it cannot be found.

Practically, the file carries the spray-out cards, the panel photographs, and a note on why the clear boundary sits where it does. Most carriers pay blend as written once the reason is documented. Some negotiate. Where a carrier will not fund it, the owner has three honest choices: pay the difference, accept a boundary that may be visible at certain angles, or defer to a larger refinish later. That choice gets put in front of you before anything is sprayed, never afterwards.

## Edges, jambs and the places a cheap spot repair stops

Cheap spot repairs stop at the visible face, and the giveaway is always an edge. A compartment door painted on the outside only shows faded original colour on its return the moment it opens. A repaired entry door with an unpainted jamb reads instantly as bodywork to anyone who has seen one. Lower panel returns, wheel arch lips and the underside of a cap tell the same story, since they are where colour boundaries hide and where a shortcut is discovered.

Doing it properly means parts come off and get sprayed separately so their edges and returns are covered, and jambs get their own masking and their own passes. Adding two hours here is the difference between a repair that reads as original and one that reads as a repair. On a coach we also check the inside faces of compartment door frames, because that is usually where a previous cheap repair confesses.

## The daylight walk before the vehicle is released

Shop lighting flatters paint. Fluorescent and LED light is diffuse and even, which is precisely the condition under which a slightly light metallic and a slightly heavy one look identical. Sunlight is directional and hard, and it shows orientation, texture, a mask line or a dry edge immediately. Every refinished panel gets walked outside and inspected in daylight before we call a vehicle finished.

The owner walk happens the same way. Stand at both ends of the panel rather than square to it. Look at the transition into the adjacent panels. Open every compartment door and the entry door and look at the returns. Use your own eyes rather than trusting ours, since the whole point of the daylight check is that a repair you cannot find is the finished product, and a repair you can find gets rewritten before the vehicle leaves. ### What is a blend panel, and why is it on my estimate?

A blend panel is an undamaged panel that gets refinished anyway so the colour transition happens in the middle of a surface rather than at an edge. ### Is a spectrophotometer reading better than matching on the panel?

It is a faster starting point and a worse finishing point. The instrument reads the panel accurately and returns a formula, which beats reading a code off a plate. Sprayout cards get shot, dried and checked against the panel in shop light and in daylight before anything reaches the coach.
