# Slide Out Repair for Laguna Niguel owners

Slide out repair covers Schwintek in-wall, Lippert In-Wall, Power Gear rack and pinion and BAL Accu-Slide cable systems, from a synchronisation relearn to a rebuilt room. The band is $500 to $8,500 plus, three to thirty five hours. Diagnosis starts with amp draw and rail wear, not the motor.

## The noise a slide makes before it stops moving

A slide out gives warning, and the warning is almost always audible. A Schwintek system starts to click or ratchet at one end of travel, which is the pinion skipping a rounded tooth on the rail rather than driving against it. A Power Gear rack and pinion room starts to bind in one corner and sounds like it is grinding. A BAL Accu-Slide begins to come in crooked because one cable has stretched.

Owners tend to interpret every one of these as the motor going out, and the motor is usually the last thing to fail. On a Schwintek the rail rounds its teeth first, the controller then fights the resistance, and the motor dies of overwork months later. Replacing the motor on a rounded rail buys weeks. We would rather tell you that at estimate than take the money twice.

## Identifying the mechanism from the rail, not the badge

The mechanism gets identified before anything is priced, because the four common systems share almost nothing. Schwintek and Lippert In-Wall run vertical toothed rails inside the side walls of the room with a motor at the top of each. Power Gear uses a horizontal rack under the floor with a pinion gearbox driving it. BAL Accu-Slide runs cables and pulleys under the room and pulls rather than pushes.

Getting this wrong is expensive in the ordinary way. A Schwintek rail set and a Power Gear rack are not remotely interchangeable, and the labour access differs completely, since one is inside a wall cavity and the other is under a floor. We read the rail profile and the motor mount, then confirm against the coach build data before a part is ordered on a job over $2,000, where a 50 percent deposit applies at authorisation.

## Slide out motor and gear replacement

Drive replacement starts with a measurement rather than a parts order. We put a clamp meter on the motor lead and read amp draw through a full cycle, in and out, watching for the spike that says the room is binding at a specific point in travel. A healthy Schwintek draws steadily. One fighting a worn rail draws a rising curve toward one end and then drops as teeth skip.

On an in-wall system the motor and gearbox come out through the top of the wall cavity with the room partly extended, which means the room has to be supported before anything is unbolted. Rails get inspected tooth by tooth while access is open, since the wall is already apart and doing it later means paying that access labour twice. Rounded rails get replaced in pairs, because a fresh pinion against one old rail rounds the new gear instead.

Power Gear and BAL work differently. A rack and pinion job means dropping the underbelly, cleaning years of road grit out of the rack, checking the gearbox for backlash, and often finding that the real fault is a seized idler rather than the motor. Cable systems get cable and pulley inspection with the room supported, and a stretched cable is replaced as a set so the room stays square. Mechanical and electrical labour posts at $260 per hour.

## Slide room structural repair and sag correction

A slide room is a box that cantilevers out of a wall, and gravity is patient. Over years the outboard end drops, and the whole geometry of the seal system changes with it. Room sag is measurable: we level across the top of the room in and out, then compare the gap at the top wiper seal along its length. A room that has dropped pulls that wiper lip off the flange at the outboard corner while it still looks perfectly seated inboard.

That is the mechanism behind most slide leaks that survive a seal replacement. Water does not enter through a failed rubber lip, it enters through a gap the sagging room created, and a new seal set in the same geometry leaks the same way. Correction means shimming, adjusting the support arms, and on a hydraulic room sometimes rebuilding the floor edge where the sag started as a soft spot rather than a settling.

Floor sag on a hydraulic room is its own repair. The floor of a slide is typically a thin laminated panel, and a leak at the outboard seal soaks its edge, which then compresses under load and takes the whole room out of level. Fixing the mechanism without fixing that floor is treating a symptom. Room rebuild work sits in its own band and is the part of a slide job most likely to move the total toward the top of the range.

## Synchronisation, controller relearn and the check we run twice

An in-wall system with two motors has to stay in time with itself, and the controller learns the travel limits. Any repair that involves a motor, a rail or a power interruption ends with a relearn, run to the manufacturer sequence for that controller, which usually means driving the room fully in against its stops and holding it there so the controller records both ends of travel.

Skipping the relearn is the reason a slide comes home from a shop working and then jams three weeks later at one corner. We run it, then run the room repeatedly to confirm it holds sync under load, because a relearn that takes on an empty room sometimes will not hold once the furniture and the occupants are back in it. Diagnostic and programming time posts at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorised repair.

## Where a slide job lands inside the range

The bottom of the band is a seal adjustment, a lubrication and a relearn on a system that is mechanically sound. Middle of the band is a motor and gear set with rails, on a room that is still square. The top is a room out, floor edge rebuilt, rails replaced, seals renewed and geometry reset, on a coach where the leak has been running long enough to involve the sidewall.

Two things move a job more than anything else. One is how many slides the coach has, because a bunkhouse fifth wheel with three rooms is three of everything. The other is access. A slide over a wheel well or under an awning arm costs access hours before any repair labour starts, and on some Class A layouts the interior cabinetry has to come out to reach a motor at all.

## Twenty cycles before the coach is signed out

A slide that works once has not been tested. Before release, the room is cycled repeatedly, watching amp draw for the rising curve that means something is still binding and watching the seal lips seat along their full length rather than just at the ends. Then the same cycle runs with water on the top seal and someone inside watching the sill.

Owners get shown the cycle themselves at pickup, and that is deliberate. You will operate this room several hundred times before you see us again, and you are the person best placed to hear the click that means a rail is starting to round. Knowing what healthy sounds like on your own coach is worth more than anything we could write on the invoice.

## Questions

### Why does a Schwintek slide go out of sync?

Because the two motors are electronically coordinated rather than mechanically linked, so any difference in resistance between the left and right rails lets one side lead. Resistance comes from a dry rail, a worn gear tooth, a dragging seal or a room that has dropped slightly in its opening. The controller then times out mid travel. Resynchronising takes minutes. Making it stay synchronised means correcting the resistance, which is the part a reset alone never addresses.

### What is the difference between an in-wall slide system and a rack and pinion one?

Where the load goes. Schwintek and Lippert In-Wall carry the room on vertical toothed columns inside the sidewall, which saves interior floor space and puts every ounce of the room's weight onto two gear tracks. Power Gear rack and pinion runs the room on rails under the floor, carrying weight on rollers and using the gears only to move it. In-wall systems suit smaller rooms. Heavy bedroom and living rooms belong on under floor rails.

### Can a slide room that has dropped at the outboard end be squared up again?

Usually, once the cause is separated from the symptom. Shimming a dropped room hides three different faults: worn rollers or gear teeth, a sagging floor under the slide opening, and a racked opening from an impact or frame flex. Only the first is a slide repair. Measurement across the opening diagonals decides which one you have, and adjusting the room without checking that is how a coach ends up with a room that reseals for one season.

### What does a slide room rebuild involve?

The room comes out of the coach entirely. Its floor, framing and fascia are inspected, soft decking and delaminated laminate are replaced, the perimeter is rebuilt square, and the drive hardware and seals are renewed before it goes back in. Rebuild is the correct call when water has been running down the inner face for seasons and the room itself has lost strength. Slide room rebuild and structural repair bands $1,500 to $7,500 across ten to 35 hours.
