# Two seasons of sun, one weeping window, and eleven feet of released sidewall bond

A soft bulge low on the off door sidewall of a 38 ft fifth wheel turned out to be released adhesive over eleven feet, not a dent. Two seasons of coastal sun and one weeping window corner did it. Relamination ran 34 to 72 hours inside the $1,500 to $20,000 plus band.

## The soft place that was not a dent

Treat this record as an illustrative composite of a job type rather than a report on one unit. The mechanisms, the measurements and the sequence are real and typical of laminated sidewall failures; the customer is not identified because there is no single customer here.

A 38 ft triple axle fifth wheel arrived with a flat, springy area low on the off door side under the galley window. There was no crease and no paint damage, which is the first clue that the cause is chemistry rather than contact. Released adhesive looks like a shallow dent from six feet and feels like nothing a dent ever felt like under a hand.

Heat makes it worse and then hides it. On a hot afternoon the released area stands visibly proud of the wall, and by the following morning it has settled back close to flat. Owners who photograph it at the wrong time of day come away thinking they imagined it.

## Tapping the wall, corner to corner

The boundary of a delamination is not where the bulge is. It is where the sound changes. A plastic tap on a grid gives a tight click over bonded laminate and a dull thud over released laminate, and the line between them usually sits a foot or more outside anything the eye can find.

On this wall the thud ran eleven feet, from a point ahead of the window back to the rear corner radius, all of it below the window line and none above. That asymmetry is diagnostic by itself. Water entering at a roof seam delaminates downward from the top. Water entering at a window corner runs inside the cavity and delaminates from the sill outward and down. The tap line said window before a meter came out of the drawer.

Cutting to find an edge is how a small job becomes a large one, so the tap line and the meter grid were drawn on a plan and photographed before a fastener moved.

## Where the water entered, and where it went

Meter readings on a grid put wet at the lower window corner and dry within eight inches of the frame in every direction except down. The sealant on the upper window radius had shrunk and pulled away, an age failure rather than a workmanship failure, and it had been letting water past for at least two seasons.

Water in a laminated wall does not run to the floor and stop. It sits against the aluminium studs, wicks along the lauan strip under the sill, and cooks the adhesive every time the wall gets hot. Coastal Southern California is unkind to that mechanism specifically: humid nights, hot afternoons, and a wall expanding and contracting against a bond that is already weaker than it was last summer.

Two seasons is a short life for that failure and a long time for a wall to lose bond in silence.

## Skin off, and the two things underneath

The skin came off in one piece, which is the outcome you want and never the outcome you plan for. Underneath, the lauan strip below the sill had gone to fibre and came out in handfuls rather than sheets. Two aluminium studs carried white powder corrosion where moisture had been trapped against them.

Neither stud had lost section, so neither was replaced, and that judgement was measured and photographed rather than asserted. Removing sound structure is as much a failure as leaving damaged structure, and it is the failure nobody complains about because it looks like thoroughness on an invoice.

The skin was sound too. Flat on a bench it took filler in two places. Relamination rather than replacement was therefore the honest call, and it is worth saying plainly: replacing a sound skin because replacement is easier to price is how a $1,500 to $20,000 plus band gets pushed toward its top end for no benefit to the owner.

## The supplement conversation, in three parts

The first estimate priced eight feet of delamination and a spot refinish. Nothing about that was careless; it was written from what a walkaround shows. Once the tap line and the moisture grid existed, three separate additions had to be argued, and each was argued with a photograph and a measurement rather than with an opinion.

The window reseal drew the hardest pushback, which is predictable. It is a maintenance item on the same wall as a covered loss, and it prices against the window and frame reseal band of $250 to $3,500. The position taken was mechanical rather than moral. Leave the source in place and the same wall returns inside two years, and the file says so with dated meter readings on a grid rather than with a warning delivered by phone.

The refinish extension was the third and the quietest. Bond line print through is invisible in a bay and obvious in a car park, so the argument was settled with photographs shot outdoors at a shallow angle.

## Rebonding, vacuum pressure, and waiting for cure

Rebonding is a pressure and time problem more than a skill problem. Adhesive goes onto the backer and the skin, the skin is set, and the whole area then has to be held flat under even pressure while it cures. Vacuum bagging does that better than clamps and battens, because clamps leave a pattern of hard points that print through the gel coat six months later.

Cure time does not compress. Heat helps within limits, rushing does not help at all, and a wall pulled out of pressure early telegraphs every bond line the first time low sun hits it. That risk is the honest reason a laminate job occupies a bay for days during which nothing appears to be happening, and it is worth saying at authorisation rather than at week three.

The wall was closed only after the interior sill and the replacement lauan were in and dry, and the readings that proved dry went into the file next to the readings that proved wet.

## What would have made this a smaller number

No blame in this section. A sealant joint shrank, which is what sealant joints do on a schedule nobody publishes. Sequence is the whole story, because every stage of it was cheaper than the stage that followed.

The window wept before the wall went soft. The wall went soft before the bulge appeared. The bulge appeared before a palm could feel a drum head over eleven feet. A reseal caught at the weeping stage sits near the bottom of the $250 to $3,500 window band. The same neglect two seasons later reached relamination hours in the dozens, plus interior panels, plus a full sidewall refinish.

- Walk the sealant twice a year, looking at window radii before roof seams, because radii shrink first.
- Press a flat palm on each sidewall at wash time, top to bottom, listening as much as feeling.
- Meter the four lowest window corners once a season and write the numbers down, since the trend matters more than any single reading.
- Photograph a bulge the day it appears, with a straight edge in frame for scale, and photograph it again in the morning.

## Deposits, the balance, and the dates on the order

Finished, the job ran 34 to 72 hours inside the delamination band of $1,500 to $20,000 plus. It cleared $2,000, so a 50 percent deposit applied at authorisation. It reached $10,000 only in the version that carried interior panels and a window, and the further 25 percent at parts arrival applied there and not otherwise. Special order interior panels required a 100 percent deposit at order, which is non refundable because the panel belongs to the unit it was ordered for the moment it ships.

Elapsed time was about four weeks, nine working days of it supplement review. Sales tax of 7.75 percent applied to parts and materials, labour was untaxed, and a card payment above $1,000 carried the 3.5 percent surcharge.

The delivery photographs went into the file beside the intake set. That pairing is the only way anybody later can see the wall was opened, dried, measured and closed rather than skimmed and painted, which is the version of this repair that costs a third as much and lasts a fifth as long.
