# Standard Fifth Wheel

A standard fifth wheel is a laminated box on a steel frame with two or three slide rooms cut into its sidewalls. The slide openings are the weak points, structurally and for water. OCRV Center repairs laminate, slide rooms, frames and interiors under one estimate and one schedule.

## Cutting three holes in a sidewall has consequences

A laminated sidewall works as a continuous sheet. Cut a slide opening into it and the load that used to run through that area has to travel around it, concentrating at the four corners of the opening. Manufacturers reinforce those corners with a header and a rail, and the reinforcement is adequate when everything else is right. It stops being adequate when the coach is towed for years with a room that is heavy on one side, or when a corner has taken water and the framing behind the laminate has softened. Cracks then start at the corner radius and run diagonally, which is the signature of stress rather than impact.

The second consequence is that a slide rail is a horizontal line of fasteners driven through a laminate. Any fastener through a laminate is a water path once its sealant fails, and there are dozens along a rail. Delamination below a slide rail is one of the most common findings on any coach past its fifth season, and it is usually blamed on the slide seals when the actual entry point is a rail fastener two feet above them. Delamination repair runs $1,500 to $20,000, ten to a hundred hours.

## Which seal is actually leaking, and how to tell in ten minutes

Three seals surround a slide room and they fail in different ways with different symptoms. The wiper seal rides on the outside of the room and sweeps water off as the room comes in, so a worn wiper leaves a wet stripe on the floor at the slide edge immediately after retracting in rain. The bulb seal compresses against the sidewall while the room is out, so a failed bulb leaks while you are parked and camped rather than while you are travelling. The D seal along the top does the same job on the horizontal run.

Which one has failed is diagnosable with a hose and somebody inside watching. Guessing costs far more, because replacing all three when one failed is a bill without a reason behind it. Slide out seal replacement runs $400 to $3,000, two to fourteen hours. Where the wall behind the seal has already gone soft, the seal is not the job at all: the wall is, and fitting a new seal against a compromised wall buys the same phone call nine months later with more damage behind it.

## The same repair on a fifth wheel and on a bumper pull trailer

The same job prices differently against a travel trailer, and not because of the badge. A fifth wheel is taller, so roof work happens off a lift rather than a ladder. It is heavier, so it has to be properly supported before anything structural is touched. Its front third is a raised deck with the bedroom in it, and that deck has a floor structure with a step in it, which means a front floor repair is two floors at two heights joined by a riser rather than one flat plane to lift and relay.

The pin box also gives a fifth wheel a failure mode a bumper pull cannot have. A travel trailer loads its coupler in tension along the tongue. A fifth wheel loads its pin box vertically into the middle of a truck bed and takes braking load through the same bracket. That is why frame work on a fifth wheel starts with an inspection of the pin box bracket welds even when the visible damage is at the far end of the coach, and why a shop that skips that step is guessing about what it just repaired.

## What gets left off a first fifth wheel estimate

Four lines go missing with regularity. Interior disassembly, because reaching a sidewall from inside means removing cabinetry and sometimes a slide room. Floor structure, because a coach that took a corner impact usually moved at the floor to sidewall joint and that shows only once the covering is lifted. The slide room itself, since a room whose opening has moved will bind whether or not the room was struck. And levelling, because a frame that shifted changes what the jacks are being asked to hold.

Each of those is a supplement written during teardown rather than an argument at the front counter. What makes them fundable is evidence gathered on the day: the opening measured diagonally corner to corner with both numbers written down, the floor photographed with the covering lifted, the slide travel recorded before and after the repair. Insurance walk-ins are welcome and we write the estimate, and the estimate names the risks it expects to find so the supplement surprises nobody in week three.

## Checking a used fifth wheel in an hour

One hour is enough if it is spent in the right four places. Start with a string line down each side at rail height and look for a bow. Then tap the sidewall below every window and along every slide rail, listening for the change from ring to thud. Then get under the front with a torch and read the pin box bracket welds, especially along the underside toe where a crack begins. Then look at the roof from a ladder rather than from the ground, where nothing is visible.

Inside, run every room fully out and back while somebody watches from outside for the room dropping at its outer edge, which means the slide floor structure has sagged. Lift a corner of the flooring at a slide threshold if the seller allows it. Pre purchase inspection on a trailer runs $300 to $900, two to four hours, which is a small number against a slide room rebuild and structural repair at $1,500 to $7,500 on a coach you have already bought.
