Damage Stops Where The Adhesive Still Holds
The boundary of a delamination repair is not where the damage looks like it ends. It is the last point outward where the bond still holds, found by working out from the defect until the note changes back. Cut inside that line and the repair fails along its own edge within a season.
The boundary is found rather than guessed
A delaminated area has no edge you can see. It has a centre, where the skin is furthest from the substrate, and it fades outward through a zone where adhesive is partly attached, partly failed and holding by very little. Somewhere past that is material that is properly bonded. The repair boundary is that last point, and establishing it is the first operation on the job rather than a detail settled later.
It is found by working outward. Tap from the middle of the defect in each direction until the hollow note gives way to a tight click, mark the transition with tape, and keep going past it to confirm the click holds rather than turning hollow again a foot further on. Voids are frequently not one shape. A struck sidewall can carry a large area behind the impact and a second, separate area a metre away where energy travelled along a bond line and released it somewhere else entirely.
Then the marks get checked with the skin off, because tapping through a laminate estimates a boundary and does not prove it. Adhesive that is holding by a fraction of its area still returns a reasonably tight note, which means the audible boundary is almost always optimistic. Peeling back to where the bond genuinely resists is what sets the real line, and on most jobs it sits a few inches outside the tape.
What happens when the cut lands inside the line
New adhesive bonds beautifully to sound material and poorly to material that is already halfway released. Terminate a repair inside the failing zone and the new work is anchored, at its edge, to a bond that was on its way out before anybody touched it. The repair itself will be sound. The joint at its perimeter is the weak point, and it is loaded by exactly the forces that caused the original failure: thermal cycling, flex over road inputs, and water sitting in the seam.
The failure mode is recognisable and this shop sees it regularly on work done elsewhere. A neat rectangular repair with a visible line around it, sound in the middle, hollow for a hand's width all the way around the edge. The second failure is larger than the first, because it now includes the original zone plus everything the new edge dragged with it, and it is much harder to price as a claim because the intervening repair muddies the sequence.
What the honest boundary does to a number
It makes the estimate larger, and there is no way to present that as good news on the day. A visible bubble the size of a dinner plate can carry a bonded boundary a metre out in every direction, which converts a panel patch into a section of sidewall. Delamination repair runs $1,500 to $20,000 or more precisely because of this, and the position within that band is set by the boundary rather than by the size of the mark that made an owner call.
The compensating truth is that the boundary is where the extra cost stops. Establishing it means the scope has a defensible edge rather than an optimistic one, and a scope with a defensible edge does not generate a second supplement three weeks later when the same wall is found to continue. On a claim, a boundary established at teardown and photographed against the intake set is one of the easier things to get approved, because it is visible in an image rather than asserted in a description.
It also decides whether a repair or a replacement is the right route, which is a decision that gets made once the boundary is known and not before. A bonded area that runs into a structural joint, or a skin that has released from its framing over a wide area, is no longer a laminating job. Where the geometry has moved as well, meaning a window or a roof opening no longer sits where it should, that is a structural problem in cosmetic clothing and the reference page on repair or replace is the honest place to read about the comparison.
Why two estimates on one wall differ by a factor
Owners collect a second opinion and find two numbers that are not in the same range, which reads as one shop being dishonest. Usually it is one shop measuring a mark and the other measuring a boundary. Both are describing work they intend to do. Only one of them has established where the work has to stop, and the one that has not will discover it either during the job as a supplement or afterwards as a comeback.
The question that separates them is short and it is worth asking of any shop, this one included: how did you establish the outer boundary of the repair, and can you show me where you marked it. A shop that tapped the wall, taped a line and can point at the tape is describing a method. A shop that quoted from the photograph of a bubble is quoting the bubble. Neither answer requires an owner to know anything about laminates to interpret.
How the boundary gets recorded
The tape stays on the panel and gets photographed, wide enough that its position on the vehicle is unambiguous and close enough that the transition is visible. Then the same area is photographed again with the skin lifted, showing adhesive condition at the line. Two frames, same position, taken days apart, are what a reviewer needs in order to accept a boundary that is larger than the mark, and they answer without anyone raising it the question of whether the shop found the extent or created it.
The record has a second use after the repair. A boundary photographed and dated is the reference for anybody looking at that wall later, including a future buyer's inspector, who will tap it and find a repair. A repair with a documented extent and a reason for its edge is a completely different item on an inspection report from an unexplained hollow patch. That is worth more to an owner at resale than it appears to be worth on the day it is written down.
The parts of the boundary an owner can verify without tools
An owner does not need a moisture meter to sanity check a boundary somebody else drew. Press firmly with a flat palm, not a fingertip, moving outward from the damage in a straight line, and feel for the point where the wall stops giving and starts pushing back. Do it on the opposite side of the coach at the same height for a control. A wall that flexes for two feet past where the repair line was drawn is a question worth asking out loud before anything is authorised.
The second check is the tap, and it works because sound travels differently through bonded laminate than through laminate that has let go. A live panel returns a tight, short note. A separated one returns a duller, hollower one, and the change between them is usually abrupt rather than gradual. Walk the tap outward in a grid until the note changes back, and you have found roughly the same edge a technician would find, give or take a few inches.
Neither test replaces a meter, and neither finds water that has travelled inside the structure without separating the bond yet. What they do is tell an owner whether the number in front of them was arrived at by measurement or by eye, which is the more useful thing to know when two estimates disagree by several thousand dollars.
