Slide out repair, seals and mechanisms

A slide that sticks and a slide that leaks are usually the same problem seen from two sides. OCRV Center services Schwintek, Lippert In-Wall, Power Gear and BAL Accu-Slide systems in shop, and checks rail synchronisation before replacing a motor.

The motor is rarely the part that failed

A slide that stalls, groans or comes out crooked is usually a synchronisation or a binding problem, and the motor is simply the thing that gave up trying. Replacing it without finding the bind gets you a new motor and the same symptom.

On a Schwintek the wear item is the rail. Teeth round over gradually, the two sides fall out of sync, and the room racks slightly in its opening. Reading the rail is the diagnosis. The motor is a consequence.

Wiper, bulb and D seals do different jobs

A slide has more than one seal and they fail differently. Wiper seals clean the roof of the room as it travels. Bulb seals compress to close the gap when it is in. D seals sit at the corners where the geometry is worst. A leak diagnosed as "the seal" without identifying which one is a guess.

Compression matters as much as condition. A seal in good shape on a room sitting slightly low will still let water in, which is why alignment gets checked before seals get ordered.

What a slide leak becomes if it waits

Water entering at a slide runs down inside the wall and into the floor at the edge of the opening. By the time there is a soft spot underfoot, the repair has moved from a seal to a subfloor, and the range moves with it.

That is the practical argument for treating a slide leak as urgent even though nothing is obviously broken: the cheap version of this repair has an expiry date.

Four systems, four failure patterns

Schwintek is electric through-wall, and its problem is rail wear. Lippert In-Wall is similar with different tolerances. Power Gear rack and pinion tends toward gear and alignment issues. Hydraulic systems fail at the cylinder and the fluid, and milky fluid means water has already got in somewhere.

Six things to establish before anyone is called

Half the slide problems that arrive here have a symptom nobody has described accurately, and the description is most of the diagnosis. Watching the room travel once, deliberately, from outside, tells a technician more than a paragraph of history.

  • Whether the room comes out square or leads with one end
  • Whether it stalls at the same point every time or at a different point
  • What the house battery reads at rest, since low voltage mimics a failing motor
  • Whether the noise is a grind, a click or a groan under load
  • Whether the floor inside the room has any give at its outer edge
  • Whether the seals sit against the wall evenly when the room is in

Whether to keep operating a slide that is misbehaving

The instinct is to keep cycling it and hope it settles. On a slide that is out of sync, every cycle racks the room a little further in its opening and works the seal geometry against itself, so the cheap repair gets less cheap each time. On a room that is binding on something solid, continued operation is how a motor mount tears out of a wall.

The practical rule is to bring it in with the room in whichever position it can safely hold, and to stop cycling it once you have watched it travel once. If it has to come in extended because it will not retract, say so on the first call, because that changes how the coach travels and where it can be parked.

Where a slide sits between a claim and a repair bill

Mechanism wear is not a claim. It is a wear item on a moving part that carries a room weighing more than a small car, and carriers treat it as maintenance for the same reason they treat brake pads that way.

Water that entered through a slide is more complicated. Where the seal failed slowly, the resulting subfloor damage is usually declined. Where the seal was damaged by an impact, a branch or a road event, both the seal and everything downstream of it can be part of the same loss. Owners who have had a slide leak for two seasons and then have an accident should expect an adjuster to separate those, and the photographs taken on day one are what makes the separation possible.

One slide, four slides, and what the count changes

A single small slide on a travel trailer is usually one mechanism, one set of seals and a straightforward diagnosis. A large coach with four rooms, including a full wall slide, has several mechanisms of different types, a levelling system that has to be right before any of them are assessed, and rooms whose weight makes their alignment sensitive to how the coach is parked.

Which is why assessment on a big coach starts with levelling rather than with the room that is complaining. A slide diagnosed on an unlevel surface produces a scope that is wrong in both directions, and it is the single most common reason a slide repair does not hold.

Three to 35 hours, banded $500 to $8,500 or more, and Accu-Slide sits toward the lower half of that unless the floor is involved. It is a cable and pulley system, so the common repairs are a snapped or stretched cable, a seized pulley and a worn roller, all of which are parts and access rather than heavy labour. Rebuild kits for Accu-Slide, Schwintek and Lippert bands $750 to $7,500 depending on how much of the drive is replaced.

Why does a slide bind only when the coach is not level?

Because an unlevel coach twists its own opening. A slide room is a rigid box travelling through a rectangular hole, and the hole stops being rectangular when the chassis is racked across uneven ground. Rooms on in-wall gear tracks are least tolerant of that, because both columns must travel at the same rate. Level first, then operate. A room that binds on a level surface has a real fault, and one that binds only off level has a habit worth breaking.
