Stapled ply boxes screwed into the wall framing
An RV upper cabinet is a box of quarter inch or three eighths ply, stapled at the corners, with a thin back and a face frame, held to the coach by screws through a cleat into the wall framing plus a few into the ceiling framing. That construction is not a criticism. It is how a cabinet gets light enough to hang on a wall that is itself a bonded sandwich rather than a stud wall. It does mean a cabinet is only as good as its anchoring, and the anchoring is only as good as the framing behind the panel.
So a cabinet pulling away from a wall is almost never a cabinet problem. Either the cleat screws have worked loose under road vibration, or they went into panel with no framing behind them in the first place, or the framing they went into has been wet. We open the trim, find what the screws are actually holding into, and fix that. Driving a longer screw into the same wet framing gets a coach through the next few hundred miles and no further than that, which is why we do not offer it.
Hinges and slides fail long before a door does
Doors get blamed and hardware is the failure. Factory RV cabinet hinges are usually a light European cup hinge or a simple wrap around, and they carry a door through thousands of road cycles a house door never sees. The cup screws loosen in thin ply, the hinge arm develops play, the door starts sitting low, and then the catch stops engaging. Drawer slides go the same way. A bottom mount roller slide with a plastic wheel wears the wheel flat, the drawer drops at the front, and the face begins rubbing the opening.
Replacing hardware rather than doors is the cheapest useful work that happens in this bay. Moving to a full extension slide with a soft close mechanism, and to a hinge with real adjustment on three axes, changes how a coach feels to use and sits at the bottom of the price band. It also solves a door alignment complaint that no amount of door work would have solved, because the door was never the part that moved out of position in the first place.

Refacing against replacing, and how that call gets made
Refacing keeps the carcasses and changes what you see: new doors and drawer faces, new hardware, and a veneer or laminate over exposed face frames and end panels. It is right when the boxes are sound, the layout works, and the objection is that the coach looks like its model year. Replacing means new carcasses, which means new anchoring, wall panel repair where the old boxes came off, and a countertop that will not fit what came before. The labour gap between those paths is large and it is almost entirely teardown.
The call gets made by testing the boxes, not by looking at them. We check whether a carcass is square, whether the back is still attached, whether a cleat holds a screw at full torque, and whether the material has been wet. If those pass, refacing is the right money. If the coach also needs a floor, the arithmetic shifts, because cabinets coming out for a floor are already halfway to replaced and doing both together avoids paying twice for one teardown.
Matching a door profile and stain that is out of production
Matching a factory door is the request we most often have to answer honestly. A cabinet door carries a profile, a species or a printed pattern, and a factory stain and topcoat schedule. Production changes every few model years and no supplier stocks doors for a coach out of production. What can be done is a new door built to the same outside dimensions with a profile cut to match, then colour matched by spraying to a sample rather than to a name, because a stain code from the build year is not what a fifteen year old interior looks like today.
The honest version is that one replacement door in a run of eleven original doors will be visible to the owner who paid for it and invisible to everyone else. Where a true match is the requirement, the reliable route is replacing every door on that run, which is how a single broken door becomes a refacing conversation. On a coach with printed pattern doors rather than real wood, matching is harder still, and painting the whole run is frequently both the cheaper answer and the better looking one.
A carcass that has held water will not hold a screw
Particle core and thin ply that has been wet is finished as a fastener substrate, and that fact decides more cabinet jobs than any other. The material swells, the fibres break down, and the hole a screw came out of becomes a hole no larger screw will hold either, because nothing sound remains around it to compress. Owners discover it when a cabinet re secured last season is loose again, or when a hinge screw spins with no resistance at all and keeps spinning however hard it is driven.
Options at that point are honest and limited. A sound section can be scarfed in where damage is local. A cleat can be replaced outright with new material fastened into dry framing. Or the carcass gets replaced. Injecting adhesive into a wet crumbling hole and driving a bigger screw lasts until the next long tow, and it is not something we will do. Where a cabinet is wet because the wall behind it is wet, the cabinet is not the job at all, and the moisture source comes first.
What a solid door adds over the factory hollow one
Factory doors are light for a reason. Upgrading a run of hollow core or thin panel doors to solid hardwood adds mass where a coach can least afford it, high on a wall, on cabinets hung from framing engineered around the original door. Hinge load rises, cleat load rises, and the whole cabinet works harder on every road input. A solid door also swings with more momentum, so a catch that was marginal with the factory door starts letting go on rough pavement and then on merely average pavement.
Where an owner wants the look and hand feel of solid, there is a middle path we use often. A lighter core with a solid edge band and a real wood face carries the feel and the edge durability at a fraction of the added mass. Where full solid doors are the requirement, we upgrade the hinges and re anchor the cabinet into framing capable of carrying them, and that extra work appears on the estimate at the start rather than surfacing as a supplement later.
Latches, catches and what the road does to them
A cabinet latch on a coach is a road safety item rather than a convenience. A galley upper that opens on a highway ramp empties itself into the aisle, and a heavy door swinging on a loose hinge in traffic is worse than the dishes are. Positive catches, a bullet catch or a proper cabinet lock, hold under lateral load. Magnetic and friction catches do not, and they are common in older coaches because they cost almost nothing to install and they felt perfectly adequate on a showroom floor.
Every cabinet we open gets its catch tested and its door checked for alignment before the coach is released, and anything that will not hold against a firm pull gets replaced. On a fifth wheel or a travel trailer, where nobody rides inside and the road input is harsher than in a motorhome, this matters more rather than less. It is also the cheapest item on any interior invoice and the one most often skipped by whoever performed the previous repair.
