Fabrication, Detail and Inspection in Laguna Niguel

Three kinds of work that do not begin with a collision: fabrication, because the part no longer exists; detail and coating, because gelcoat and clear coat are consumable in coastal sun; and inspection, because money is about to change hands. All of it happens in the Yorba Linda shop.

Work that does not start with damage

Almost everything else in this shop starts with an impact, a leak or a part that failed. These three start with a decision instead. Fabrication exists because the part does not: a coach eighteen years out of production has no front cap, no compartment door and no rear bumper available at any price, and building one becomes the only remaining path. Detail and coating exist because gelcoat and clear coat are consumable, and Southern California sun spends them faster than any brochure suggested. Inspection exists because somebody is about to sign something, and the signature has money attached to it.

Filing them together is not a shelving convenience. In all three, the estimate is as much the product as the labour is. A fabrication quote is a design review with a price on the end of it. A detail quote is a judgement about how much paint is left to work with. An inspection quote is a price on information you do not have yet. Owners who see that ask sharper questions at the counter, and sharper questions change what the work ends up costing.

The decision sitting behind each branch

Fabrication turns on one question: what does the part do. A cosmetic trim piece has options, including a used donor part shipped in from a wrecking yard in another state. A part that carries load has no such shortcut, because a rating cannot be bought secondhand and it cannot be assumed. Between those two sits the honest answer from the day axis: on a coach out of production, fabricating is often faster than sourcing, and it is the path that ends in a part which fits rather than a part which nearly fits.

Detail turns on how much film is left. A coach with healthy clear coat and chalked gelcoat on the lower panels is a candidate for correction, and correction is most of what a coating costs. A coach with clear coat lifting at the roof line is a paint job pretending to be a detail, and no amount of compound changes that. Inspection turns on exposure. Paying a few hundred dollars to learn that a fifth wheel has a wet front cap is cheap, because the alternative is discovering it after the money has already moved.

Why the vehicle comes to Yorba Linda

A frame bench is bolted through a concrete slab. A full length booth has a footprint, an air handler and a cure cycle. Calibration targets need a floor level across the whole span they occupy, controlled light and clear distance in front of the vehicle. A moisture survey needs a lift, strong light and the willingness to open a seam and look. None of that folds into a van, which is why the vehicle comes to the shop rather than the shop coming to the vehicle.

Owners in Laguna Niguel ask about this most often for inspections, and the answer does not change: there is no version of an inspection here that happens in a storage yard. If a trailer you want to buy is sitting in a lot, arrange for it to be brought up here, or arrange for the seller to bring it. A meter reading taken in a driveway with nothing under the vehicle is a guess with a decimal point on it, and selling one of those would be worse than declining the job.

How an insurance claim touches these three

Carriers pay to restore a vehicle to the condition it was in, which draws a clean line through this category. Fabricated structure inside a claim is usually approved once we document that the part is discontinued, because the alternative is a total loss on a repairable coach. A coating is almost always customer pay, unless a documented coating existed before the loss and the refinish work destroyed it. Detail hours appear on claims as clean up after repair, not as a reconditioning package bolted onto the estimate.

Assessment is where this category and the claim overlap hardest. Insurance walk-ins are welcome and we write the estimate. Photographs at intake, before anything is touched, are what make a supplement credible three weeks later when teardown finds a cracked rear wall stud behind a bumper that looked merely scuffed. A supplement is not a sign that something went wrong. It is the ordinary shape of a claim on a vehicle nobody can see inside of from the parking lot.

What the cheap version of each one costs later

Each branch has a cheap version, and each cheap version has an invoice attached to it further down the calendar. A bumper welded to a fiberglass skin instead of into the frame rails pulls the rear wall apart the first time it takes a hitch load over a driveway apron. A D ring lag screwed into three quarter inch plywood holds fine until the day it matters, then tears out with the cargo still attached to it.

On the surface side, a rotary polisher in a hurry burns clear coat off a crown line, and the repair is refinish labour at $210 an hour instead of detail labour at $95. A coating laid over dead clear coat seals the failure under a hard layer, so the peel continues where nobody can reach it. An inspection that is really a walk around with a flashlight produces a document which reads like a report and protects nobody, and that is worse than having no report at all.

What these jobs are priced on

Labour is posted and it is not negotiated at the counter. Body and paint runs $210 an hour, mechanical and electrical $260, diagnostics, scan and programming $285 with a one hour minimum credited against an authorised repair, and detail $95. Materials calculate off the hours written rather than being guessed at: paint supplies at $55 per paint hour, body supplies at $5 per body hour, and a $45 hazmat charge where chemicals, refrigerant or LP are involved. Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials, and labour is not taxed.

  • Fabrication is priced on drawing, material, fit up and finish, so a bracket that looks simple can carry ten hours of layout behind it.
  • Detail is priced on paint condition, which is why film thickness gets measured before a number is written down.
  • Inspection is priced on systems present: two slides, a generator and a hydronic heat system take longer than a single axle utility trailer.
  • A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorisation on any job over $2,000, and a further 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000.
  • A 3.5 percent surcharge applies to card payments over $1,000.

What to sort out before the appointment

Send photographs before you make the drive north. Six frames, one from each corner and one close on whatever prompted the call, gets a real conversation started rather than a range read off a menu. Bring the serial or VIN plate reading, the model year and the floor plan designation, because a Lippert In-Wall rail and a Schwintek rail can hide under the same trim on different model years and the parts are nothing alike.

Bring the broken part if it comes off, or bring measurements you took yourself. For an inspection, bring the listing, the asking price and whatever the seller has put in writing, since the report is going to be read against those claims. For detail, say plainly whether you plan to keep the coach or sell it, because those are two different jobs and only one of them is worth spending at the top of the range.
