ADAS Scan and Recalibration, in detail

ADAS recalibration aims the cameras and radar a collision repair disturbed. A windshield, a bumper cover carrying a radar bracket, a mirror module or a ride height change all require it. Scan and calibration is $275 to $1,800, one to seven hours, at the posted diagnostic rate.

Repairs that make a calibration mandatory rather than optional

Calibration is not an add on to a collision repair. It is the step that makes a repaired vehicle's safety systems point where they believe they point. Several ordinary repairs move a sensor, or move the thing a sensor looks through, and each of them requires calibration afterwards: a windshield replacement on a Sprinter, where the forward camera sits behind the glass on a bonded bracket; a front bumper cover carrying a radar bracket, which comes off for almost any front end repair; a mirror housing holding a blind spot module; and any change in ride height from suspension or air bag work.

Ride height is the one owners never expect. A radar aimed level with the road while the vehicle sat at its designed height is aimed at the pavement or the treetops once the vehicle sits differently, and nothing about the repair looks wrong from outside. A steering angle sensor relearn belongs in the same category after suspension or alignment work, since lane keeping steers from that signal. A tow hitch installation that changes rear height under load can matter too.

  • Windshield replacement where a camera or rain sensor mounts to the glass.
  • Front bumper cover removal on any vehicle carrying radar behind the fascia.
  • Mirror or quarter panel repair where a blind spot module lives.
  • Suspension, air bag or spring work that changes ride height.
  • Any structural repair that alters the position of a sensor mounting point.

Static targets, dynamic road routes and what each one needs

Static calibration happens in the shop with targets. The vehicle sits on a level floor, targets go at a manufacturer specified distance, height and lateral offset from the vehicle centreline, and the surrounding requirements are strict: controlled light, nothing reflective behind the target, correct tire pressures, the specified fuel level, no load aboard, and a floor that has been measured rather than assumed. Get the centreline wrong by a small amount at the target and the aim is wrong by a much larger amount out at distance.

Dynamic calibration happens by driving. The procedure asks for clear lane markings, a specified speed range held for a specified duration, and the system learns while the scan tool watches. Orange County traffic makes that a scheduling exercise more than a technical one, and weather ends runs: rain, a low marine layer, direct sun into the camera at the wrong hour, or faded lane paint all abort a run and it starts over. Some vehicles need both procedures, in order, and one never substitutes for the other.

A clean scan report does not mean a sensor is aimed

A scan showing no stored codes is the most misleading document in this part of the trade. Codes mean a module reported a fault it was able to detect. A camera pointed two degrees low reports nothing at all, because from the module's perspective everything is working: the camera sees, the processor processes, the data looks like data. The system is confidently wrong, which is a worse condition than being switched off.

That is what makes a pre scan and post scan pair matter more than a single scan at the end. A pre scan records what the vehicle arrived with, including faults that were already there. A post scan records what it left with. Between them sit the calibration procedures actually performed, with the tool's own report attached. The scan report goes into the file with the photographs, and on an insurance repair that documentation is what shows calibration happened rather than being invoiced.

The level floor, the targets, and the shops that should decline

Requirements for static work are physical and they do not bend. A floor level across the whole area the vehicle and targets occupy, enough clear length in front of and behind the vehicle for the specified distances, target boards for the makes being worked on, and current software subscriptions to run the procedures. A large bay is not the same thing as a measured floor, and a target printed on an office printer is not a target.

A shop without those things cannot calibrate and should say so plainly, rather than running a scan, seeing no codes and handing the keys back. Diagnostics, scan and programming is posted at $285 an hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorised repair, and calibration lands at $275 to $1,800, one to seven hours, depending on how many systems the repair disturbed. A single camera after a windshield sits at the low end. A front end repair on a vehicle with radar, a forward camera and a blind spot system does not.

How this differs across a Sprinter, a box truck and a diesel pusher

Sprinter and Transit vans carry the densest sensor packages in this shop, and they are also the vehicles most likely to need a windshield. A Sprinter camera calibration is a static procedure with specific target geometry, and the van has to be empty for it, which matters when it arrives full of shelving and tools. Rivian and other electric delivery vans add camera counts and their own procedures, and the correct sequence comes from the manufacturer's service information rather than from experience with some other brand.

Commercial chassis behave differently again. A box truck may carry forward collision mitigation where the radar mounts to a bumper structure a body builder already modified, so calibration follows the body repair rather than preceding it. Class A diesel pushers on a Freightliner chassis can carry lane departure and collision mitigation, and there the difficulty is length: specified distances are measured from the front of a vehicle that might be forty feet long, in a bay that has to hold all of it plus the target distance in front.

Where calibration sits in the claim file

Carriers pay for calibration where a repair requires it, and they ask for evidence. What settles the line is the manufacturer's position statement for the procedure, the scan reports from either side of the work, and photographs of the target setup with the vehicle in place. Written that way, a calibration line rarely gets questioned. Written as a flat charge with nothing behind it, it does, and then the repair sits waiting while somebody assembles what should already have been in the file.

Timing sits at the end of the repair, after structure, panels, paint and reassembly, which is why it appears on the day axis at Day 21 and beyond rather than earlier. Calibrating before a bumper cover goes back on wastes the procedure entirely. Where a repair changed ride height, calibration waits until the vehicle sits at its final height with everything installed, and no vehicle is released before the post scan is clean and the report is filed.

What to tell us at drop off

Two things help most at the counter. First, describe what the vehicle was doing before the loss: whether lane keeping tugged at the wheel, whether collision warning fired at shadows, whether a blind spot lamp stayed lit. A pre existing complaint that goes unmentioned turns into a calibration that will not complete, and hours spent chasing a fault which was already there before the impact.

Second, say what has been done to it. Aftermarket bumpers, a light bar mounted in front of a radar, tinted strip across the top of a windshield over a camera, a lift or a levelling kit, oversized tires, and any previous glass work all change what the procedure needs and occasionally whether it can complete at all. Arrive with normal tire pressures and without a full load in the back, since both are inputs to a static procedure rather than trivia.
