Utility and Bucket Truck repair for Laguna Niguel owners

A service body is a set of boxes doing structural work

A utility service body is a steel or aluminium structure with compartments down both sides and a bed or a deck between them, mounted to the chassis on a subframe. The compartments are not just storage, they stiffen the body and carry mounting loads for whatever is bolted on top. Doors, shelves and drawers all fasten into that structure, and a compartment floor that has corroded through has lost part of what the body relies on.

Service body and utility body installation runs $2,500 to $15,000, fifteen to sixty hours, and repair work on an existing body is priced against the same construction. Toolbox and crane body installation runs $1,500 to $10,000. The engineering on any of those is the mounting rather than the item: spreading load into two crossmembers instead of one, and using a plate where a washer would fit, is the difference between an installation that lasts and one that cracks a body floor in two years.

Outriggers put the whole truck through four small pads

When a bucket truck sets up, the vehicle weight and the boom load transfer through the outriggers into the ground. Those pads are attached to a subframe or directly to the body structure, and every setup cycles that connection. Cracking at an outrigger mount is common on a truck with real hours on it, and it is a serious finding because it is the structure that keeps the vehicle stable with somebody in the air.

Our scope is the structure: the mounts, the subframe, the body and the chassis attachment. The boom, its hydraulics, its controls and any certification of the aerial device belong with a specialist in aerial equipment, and we do not represent otherwise. Frame and structural welding runs $750 to $20,000, in shop by a certified technician, with the truck supported so the frame is unloaded while the repair is made. Welding a loaded frame locks the deflection into the repair and it is not done here.

Hoist frames and tailgates on bodies that cycle all day

A dump body pivots at the rear and lifts at the front, so the hoist frame, the pivot mounts and the body longitudinals see a full load cycle every time it tips. On a truck doing twenty loads a day that is a fatigue problem rather than a wear problem, and it shows as cracking at the pivot mount, a body that no longer sits square when down, and a tailgate that stops sealing at one side. A refuse body adds a packing mechanism and a hopper that take the same abuse from the inside.

Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500 for the deck and liner work these bodies need, and bedliner and box liner spray in runs $500 to $1,800 where a surface is being protected rather than replaced. On a refuse body the corrosion is chemical as much as physical, because what sits in a hopper is wet and acidic, and no coating survives it indefinitely. Replacing thinned steel is the answer there rather than another coat over it.

Sweepers and plough trucks load the frame at the ends

A street sweeper carries a hopper, water tanks and broom assemblies, and it works at low speed with the brooms in contact, which vibrates every mount continuously. A plough truck carries a frame at the front chassis rails and takes impact loads through it every time the blade catches a lip. Both concentrate load at the ends of the chassis, which is where a frame is least supported and where cracks propagate fastest.

Those mounts get inspected as part of any body work rather than only when they fail. Headache rack and cab guard install runs $750 to $3,500 and tow hitch, pintle and gooseneck installation runs $500 to $3,500, both of which are the same engineering problem in a different position: spread the load, pick up more than one crossmember, and use a plate rather than a bracket where the moment is high. Fabrication on any of it is priced as hours at $210 per hour.

Corrosion from what the truck carries, not from the weather

Municipal working trucks corrode from the inside of the body outward, and the agent is usually whatever they carry. A dump body that hauls road base holds moisture against its floor. A refuse body holds something worse. A sweeper hopper holds wet grit against steel all day. A service body compartment holds wet tools in a closed box, which is the ideal environment for the steel underneath them.

Rust treatment and anti corrosion coating runs $400 to $3,500, and it is preventive rather than remedial: it belongs on sound steel before section is lost. Where a floor or a compartment has thinned, it gets cut out and replaced. The practical advice for a fleet is a compartment by compartment inspection on a fixed cycle, written down, so a floor gets replaced during a planned visit rather than discovered when a tool falls through it on a job site.
