Frame and structural repair is measurement first: chassis and body structure compared against published manufacturer tolerance, then a written scope for what it actually needs. Work runs $750 to $20,000 plus, five to eighty hours. No engine rebuild and no transmission rebuild work happens at this shop, only structure.

Measurement before any decision about scope
Structural assessment happens before anything else and it is not a walk around. The vehicle gets set level, reference points get established, and the structure is measured against the manufacturer published tolerance for that chassis. Diagonals and datum readings come off a tram gauge on ladder frames and trailer A frames, and off a laser measuring system where a three dimensional comparison against factory data is what the job needs. The output is a measurement sheet, not an opinion.
That sheet is what an adjuster can argue with, which is exactly the point. A statement that the frame looks bent is worth nothing on a claim. A recorded diagonal out by a stated amount against a published figure ends the conversation. It also settles scope: a rail out at one reference point is a pull, a rail out at three with a kinked flange is a section replacement, and those are different jobs carrying different bills.

Chassis alignment on a Freightliner or Spartan rail
A diesel pusher sits on a purpose built motorhome chassis, most often a Freightliner or a Spartan, with deep C section rails, bolted or riveted cross members, and outriggers carrying the body out past the rail. Alignment on that structure means rails parallel, square to datum, and unbent through the wheelbase. A rear impact that looks like bumper and cap damage can shove one rail rearward at the spring hanger, and the symptom the owner reports is a coach that pulls or eats a rear tyre.
Correcting it is anchored bench work rather than shimming. Where a rail moved at a mount, the mount gets unloaded, the rail comes back to reference, and the mount is refastened to the chassis maker specification. Ride height and axle position then get verified again, because a rail brought back into square with the axle still sitting where the impact left it is a repair that measures correctly and drives wrong.
Subframe, outrigger and cross member damage
The subframe is where a coach usually gets hurt, not the main rail. Outriggers are the cantilevered members carrying floor and sidewall load out to the body edge, and they are the first thing a kerb, a low wall or a jackknifed trailer bends. A bent outrigger drops the floor line at the sidewall, and inside that shows up as a slide that suddenly binds on one corner or a floor that squeaks where it never used to.
Repair usually means replacement rather than straightening. An outrigger is a short member carrying a lot of load in bending, and one that has already yielded will yield again in the same place. Same story with a cross member cracked at a weld toe: the crack is telling you where the stress concentration lives, and laying a bead over it simply puts the next crack a quarter inch away. The member comes out and a new one goes in.
Unibody straightening where the body is the structure
A Sprinter, a Transit or a ProMaster has no separate frame. Floor pan, rockers, B pillars and roof rails form a welded shell and the body is the structure. Straightening one is a different discipline: the shell gets anchored on the bench, pulled along the load paths the manufacturer specifies, and any member that folded is sectioned at a factory approved seam instead of pulled. Heat is tightly limited on high strength and boron sections, because heat removes the strength that member was made to have.
This is why a camper van conversion and a Class A get quoted so differently after the same impact. On the van, sectioning a rocker is a documented procedure with a specified seam location, a specified weld type and a corrosion protection step afterwards. On a Class A, body and chassis are two separate problems repaired separately. Owners who have only ever had a car fixed assume the coach must be the harder job. The van is frequently the fussier one.
Why a bent coach rail is not straightened cold
On a passenger car a mild steel rail can often come back cold. A motorhome chassis rail is not that. The section is deep, the material heavier, and the force needed to move it cold is enough to distort the flange and tear at rivet holes and mounting brackets before the web returns. Pulling cold on a heavy rail buys a straight measurement and a rail full of hidden work hardening, which is a repair that passes inspection and fails later.
What happens instead depends on the chassis maker instruction sheet. Some rails permit controlled localised heat inside a stated temperature limit, monitored with temperature indicating crayons rather than judged by eye. Others prohibit heat entirely and specify a bolted or riveted reinforcement, or a full section replacement. We follow the sheet for that chassis and the sheet goes in the file, because a rail repaired outside the maker instruction is a liability nobody should be asked to accept.
The work this department will not take on
There is no engine rebuild and no transmission rebuild work performed at this shop, and jobs where a structural repair is really a route to mechanical work we do not do get declined at the counter. There is no mobile repair and no roadside work either, because a frame bench is bolted to a floor. Where a coach needs mechanical attention alongside structural repair, it goes on the sheet as a note and the owner arranges that part separately.
We also decline structural repair where the measurement says the structure cannot come back inside tolerance and the owner wants it made to look right regardless. Skinning over a frame that is out of square produces a vehicle that tracks badly, wears tyres and loads a body in a direction it was never designed for. That is not a repair. What we will do is write what it would honestly take, and if that number exceeds what the coach is worth we say that as well.

Is a cracked trailer frame welded or replaced?
Welded and reinforced, in most cases, provided the crack is understood before the torch comes out. A crack is a symptom of stress concentration, so welding it closed without adding a fish plate or a gusset simply moves the next fracture an inch along. Frames crack most often at the A frame junction, at spring hanger mounts and where a previous owner welded a bracket to a rail. Full frame replacement is rare and is usually a total loss conversation.
