What separates the four classes once the panels are off
A motorhome is two vehicles fastened together. Underneath sits a chassis with brakes, steering and running gear. On top sits a house made of laminated sidewalls, a membrane or fiberglass roof, cabinetry that carries structural load, and eight or nine systems that all pass through the same walls. A collision damages both halves and almost never in proportion. Class A coaches take the hit on the front cap and the windshield frame. Class C coaches take it on the cabover overhang. Class B vans take it on a steel unibody that behaves like a car and a roof penetration set that behaves like a trailer.
Which class you own decides the order of work, not just its cost. On a Class A the front cap is a single moulded shell, so a strike at the corner is either a repairable laminate wound or a full cap. On a Class C the cabover is framed timber or aluminium with a skin over it, so the same strike becomes framing work before any skin goes back on. On a Class B there is a factory body shell with published tolerances and a sensor suite that has to be recalibrated afterwards. What coastal sun and marine air do to a coach parked in Orange County
Southern California does not rot a coach the way the Gulf Coast does. It bakes it. Ultraviolet load on a roof membrane runs year round here, and the failure it produces is not a hole, it is a lap sealant bead gone chalky and pulled away from the flange on a vent, an antenna base or a skylight. Marine air adds the second half: chloride settles into every steel fastener behind an aluminium extrusion, and galvanic corrosion lifts the trim from the inside out. Owners see a stain on a ceiling panel two winters after the sealant actually failed.
Storage habits make it worse in a specific way. A coach parked under a pepper tree through the dry season collects sap and leaf litter in the roof to sidewall seam, and that dam holds water for four days after a winter storm instead of shedding it in twenty minutes. We open more roofs on the seam than on the field of the membrane. If the coach lives outside between trips, a sealant walk every six months costs a fraction of a floor. Roof recoat and reseal runs $750 to $4,500. Water damage restoration with subfloor replacement runs $750 to $15,000.
The lines an adjuster leaves off a motorhome estimate
A first estimate on a motorhome is written from outside. That is not a criticism of the adjuster, it is a fact about what a photograph shows. What a photograph never shows is the laminate. A sidewall is fiberglass bonded to a foam and framing core over an interior panel, and an impact that leaves a three inch scuff outside can break the bond across four feet. Nobody knows until the panel is tapped and the skin is lifted. The second line missed is calibration, because a coach with adaptive cruise or lane keeping carries a module behind the front cap that has to be re-aimed once the cap moves.
The third is the interior. A slide face that took the impact carries cabinetry, and cabinetry in a coach is not furniture, it is part of the load path on the wall it is screwed to. The fourth is the roof edge, because a rear corner strike travels along the roof to sidewall joint and surfaces as a lifted termination bar six feet from the impact. All four appear in the supplement written during teardown, which is the step that adds days rather than the step that adds surprise. Ask what the shop expects to find before the panels come off, then compare that list against what actually appears.

Why a motorhome repair splits across four trades, and how the schedule holds
Body, paint, cabinetry and systems are four trades and a motorhome repair usually needs all four. The reason a coach sits at a dealer for five months is rarely part supply. It is that the body work waits on a booth running cars, the cabinet work waits on a subcontractor, and the electrical fault gets deferred to whoever comes in on Thursday. Sequencing is the whole job. Structure first, because everything cosmetic sits on it. Then parts arrive against a lead time nobody can shorten. Then paint, then reassembly, then systems, then a water test before anybody calls you.
Posted rates are what make that sequence auditable. Body and paint labour is $210 per hour. Mechanical and electrical is $260. Diagnostics, scan and programming is $285 with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorised repair. Paint supplies calculate at $55 per paint hour and body supplies at $5 per body hour, both from the hours written rather than as a percentage of the total. When a line moves on your estimate you can see whether it moved because hours changed or because a part price changed, and those are two different conversations to have with a carrier.
