One shell, two repair standards
A Class B starts life as a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster cargo van and becomes an RV when a converter cuts holes in it. The body half has published structural tolerances, factory sectioning procedures, specified adhesives and a repair manual. The house half has none of that. It has a converter who chose a roof fan location, a water tank position and a wiring route, and who may or may not still be trading. An estimate has to respect both halves, and one written by a shop that only sees the van will miss every line belonging to the conversion.
The seam between the two is where the arguments start. A quarter panel crease behind the sliding door is a straightforward body repair on a cargo van. On a Class B the same panel carries a cabinet screwed to it, a water line clipped behind that cabinet and a shore power inlet through it. Removing the panel is an interior teardown before it is a body job. We write the interior disassembly as its own hours instead of burying it in the panel line, because that is the line a carrier questions and the line that has to survive being questioned.
The roof cut is the thing that leaks
Every Class B failure that ends as water damage starts at a hole somebody cut. A factory van roof is a stamped panel with structural ribs. A converter cuts a fan opening, a vent, an antenna base and often a full high top or a pop top mechanism into it, then seals the cut with a bead and a flange. Those cuts do not fail because the sealant was poor. They fail because the roof panel flexes on a rib spacing the converter never designed for, and the bead is being asked to work as a structural adhesive.
On a pop top the fabric to roof joint adds a second failure line, and the third is the hinge and lift mechanism, which binds on the smallest twist in the opening. Water that gets past any of these does not run down a wall the way it does in a trailer. It tracks along a rib to the lowest point, which is usually over a cabinet run three feet away. That is why we pull the headliner rather than chase the stain. Headliner and wall panel install runs $500 to $4,500, three to eighteen hours.
Why a camper van needs a calibration line and a cargo van sometimes does not
A recent Sprinter or Transit carries radar, a forward camera, blind spot modules and often a surround view set. Every one of those has an aim referenced to the body structure. Replace a bumper cover, straighten a rail, or change ride height with a suspension repair, and the aim moves. Nothing on the dash tells the driver. The system keeps operating with a bias, which on a lane keeping module reads as a gentle pull and on an emergency braking radar reads as a late intervention on a hill.
So calibration belongs on the estimate as a completion step rather than as an upsell. ADAS scan and recalibration runs $275 to $1,800, one to seven hours, and the scan report goes into the file with before and after values. A camper van needs it more often than an empty van does, because a conversion adds several hundred pounds high in the vehicle and changes the static ride height the sensors reference. A van carrying a lithium bank and a roof array is not sitting where the factory calibration assumed it would sit.
Parts arrive through two channels with two lead times
Body panels, glass, lamps and structural pieces come through the chassis manufacturer, and on a Sprinter that means a Mercedes part number, a dealer network and a lead time usually measured in days. Conversion parts come from the converter or the component maker: a Dometic fridge, a Truma water heater, a Victron inverter, a Lippert pop top mechanism. Those lead times run in weeks and occasionally in never, because a converter that shut its doors took its part numbers with it and no cross reference exists.
The practical consequence is that a Class B repair often waits on a $200 trim moulding from the conversion side while every body panel sits on the rack ready to go. We order long lead items on day one from the first estimate rather than waiting on supplement approval, and we tell you which single item is holding the schedule. Where a conversion part cannot be sourced, fabrication is the answer and it goes on the estimate as hours. A fabricated trim panel is a few hours of body labour at $210 per hour.
What a used camper van hides
The tap test that works on a laminated trailer wall tells you nothing on a Class B, because there is no lamination to debond. Check the roof instead, from above, with a torch held at a low angle so every sealant bead throws a shadow. Cracks show as a shadow line across the bead. Then open the slider fully and watch the rear of the door as it travels, since a sag at the rear roller means the track has been loaded, and a loaded track is a $400 to $3,500 repair rather than an adjustment.
Inside, pull one cabinet kick panel and look for staining on the van floor pan, which is where every leak eventually arrives. Check whether the house bank is lithium and whether it was installed with proper isolation from the chassis system, because a badly executed lithium retrofit is both a fire risk and an insurance argument waiting to happen. House battery replacement runs $500 to $5,500. Pre purchase inspection on a van runs $285 to $800, two to four hours, and on a Class B it has to cover the conversion and not only the chassis.
