The cabover is a cantilever, and it behaves like one
The cabover on a Class C hangs unsupported over the roof of the chassis cab. It is a cantilever carrying a mattress, a window, often a television and sometimes an air conditioner, framed in timber or aluminium with a fiberglass or aluminium skin over it and a seam across the front where the front wall meets the roof. Every mile of road input works that seam. On a coach with timber framing that has taken water, the framing loses its fastener grip first and the skin then moves independently, which is what a bulge above the windshield actually means.
It is also the lowest thing on the vehicle that was never designed to hit anything. A Class C driver clears a drive through canopy with the cab and catches it with the cabover, and the damage runs from the front seam back along both sides. What decides the repair is whether the framing behind the skin is sound. If it is, the job is skin and refinish. If the framing is soft, the skin comes off and the frame is rebuilt from inside, which is why the same visible dent can be eighty hours apart depending on what is behind it.
A chassis cab and a house do not move together
The chassis cab is a Ford E series, a Chevrolet Express or a Sprinter, and it is a complete steel vehicle with its own torsional behaviour. The house is a separate structure bolted and bonded to the cutaway. The two flex at different rates, and the joint managing that difference is a sealed seam above the windshield and down both A pillars. Sealant is being asked to stay flexible and watertight for fifteen years across a joint that moves every time the coach crosses a driveway apron. It does not manage it.
So the highest value maintenance item on a Class C is that joint, inspected on a six month cycle and resealed before it opens rather than after. Roof recoat and reseal runs $750 to $4,500. The failure that follows a neglected joint is not a drip. Water enters above the windshield, runs into the cabover floor, saturates the framing carrying the bunk, and appears as a soft spot under the mattress and a stain on the cab headliner in the same week. Water damage restoration with subfloor replacement runs $750 to $15,000.
What comes through the door on a Class C, in order of frequency
Cabover leaks and the framing damage behind them lead the list. Rear corner damage from backing comes second, because a Class C carries a long overhang behind the rear axle and the driver has no instinct for how far that corner swings. Third are entry doors that will not latch, which is a structural symptom being reported as a hardware problem: a house that has twisted racks the door opening, and no amount of striker adjustment squares a parallelogram back up.
Fourth, less common and more expensive, is the rear wall on a coach with a rear kitchen or a rear bunk. That wall carries the ladder, the spare wheel carrier on some models and the bumper mount, and a low speed backing contact loads all three into the laminate at once. Trailer and camper collision and body repair, the band a Class C house falls under for that work, runs $750 to $50,000. The low end is a bumper and a scuff. The high end is a rear wall, a floor and a rebuilt corner.
Why a cabover estimate is almost always short
A first estimate on a cabover strike is written against the skin, and the skin is the cheap part. What the adjuster cannot see and does not write is the framing, the insulation that is now wet, the loom running through that framing to the marker and clearance lamps, and the bunk floor structure. Every one of those appears once the skin is off and every one is a supplement line. We photograph the framing with a scale in frame the day it is exposed, because a supplement backed by a photograph gets approved and one backed by a description gets a phone call.
The second under-scoped area is the cab to house interface. Any repair involving the front of the house means unplugging looms that pass from the chassis into the coach, and on a coach older than a decade those connectors are brittle. A broken connector found during reassembly is a legitimate supplement and one a carrier pushes back on unless it was flagged as a risk at teardown. Lighting and wiring diagnostics runs $285 to $2,500. Naming the risk early is what makes it fundable later.

Compact and Super C variants change the arithmetic
A compact Class C on a Transit or Sprinter cutaway behaves closer to a Class B than to a traditional Class C. The house is narrower, there is often no dinette slide, and the cabover may be a storage pod rather than a bunk, which removes most of the cantilever load. Those coaches leak less at the front seam and more at the roof fan and the rear door. They also inherit the chassis sensor suite, so a structural repair pulls in a scan and recalibration at $275 to $1,800.
A Super C on a medium duty chassis such as a Freightliner M2 goes the other way. The cab is a truck cab, the house is full width and heavy, and the joint between them carries far more mass. Damage on a Super C is different in kind: heavier structure, thicker laminate, longer disassembly, and a paint scheme that is usually full body rather than gelcoat with decals. Commercial hours and rates apply to the cab, RV body hours apply to the house, and both appear on one estimate with two sets of numbers.
