Who built it decides how it repairs
Two vans with identical damage can be a straightforward repair and a rebuild, and the variable is the converter. A professional house documents its work, uses backing plates, primes and bonds a cut window opening properly, and routes services with service loops and restraints. A first time builder frequently does none of that, not through carelessness but because none of it is obvious until you have seen what happens over eighty thousand miles. Neither van looks different from the outside on the day it arrives here.
So the first hour on a conversion is spent finding out which one it is. We open one cabinet, look at how it is fastened, look at how one wire crosses one rib, and look at the underside of one roof penetration from inside. Those four checks predict the rest of the vehicle with uncomfortable accuracy. What follows from them is an honest estimate: a repair on a well built van, or a repair plus a list of things that will fail regardless of the collision.
Every hole in the shell is on a list before work starts
A conversion turns a sealed steel box into a vehicle with a dozen deliberate holes in it: a roof fan, a vent, a solar gland, an antenna, a shore inlet, a propane locker vent, a water fill, a grey drain, a diesel heater exhaust and often two or three cable glands. Each one is a water path with a service life, and none are on any maintenance schedule the owner was handed. Water damage on a camper van is almost always traceable to one of them rather than to a body seam.
We inventory them at intake and check every one, because a van in for a rear quarter repair with a leaking roof gland has two problems and only one of them is the collision. Insulation and sound deadening runs $750 to $4,500, and it is relevant here because wet insulation behind a wall panel does not dry and has to come out. Naming the leak in writing on day one is what keeps it from becoming an argument about whether the shop caused it.
The electrical system somebody added after the van was built
A camper van carries a second electrical system alongside the factory one: a lithium or AGM house bank, a charger or a battery to battery unit, an inverter, a solar controller, and a distribution panel. The two systems meet somewhere, and how they meet is the single most consequential decision in the build. Done properly there is isolation, correct cable sizing, fusing at both ends of every run, and a bank mounted where a collision will not move it. Done casually there is an unfused positive cable running past a body rib.
That matters more in a body shop than anywhere else, because a body repair means cutting, welding and grinding near wiring somebody else routed. We isolate the house system before any hot work and we trace what crosses the repair area first. Twelve volt electrical, auxiliary battery and inverter system work runs $750 to $7,500, four to thirty hours. House battery replacement runs $500 to $5,500. Where a bank is mounted unsafely we will say so in writing, whether or not it relates to the claim.
Coverage on a van that is worth more than the van
A finished conversion can be worth several times the shell it started as, and a policy written on the shell pays for the shell. Some carriers will schedule a conversion at an agreed value with documentation, some will treat it as a recreational vehicle, and some write it as a commercial van and quietly cover none of the build. Owners generally find out which category they are in during their first claim, which is the worst available moment to learn it.
What makes the difference is documentation created early: photographs of the completed build, invoices for components, and a written description of what is installed. We can produce a current condition scope as part of an inspection, and it has been useful to owners at claim time more than once. Pre purchase inspection on a van runs $285 to $800, two to four hours, and the same walk produces the document a carrier needs to schedule the build properly.
What an owner built van looks like from inside a bay
The unflattering observation, offered because it is useful: most owner built vans are better finished than they are engineered. The joinery is often excellent. The fastening, the electrical protection and the water management usually are not, and those three are what a shop meets. Cabinets screwed into a wall skin with no backing plate tear the skin. A tank strapped to a floor without spreading load into a crossmember cracks the floor. A gland sealed on the outside only leaks in three years.
None of that means a build was a mistake. It means the second phase of a build is the one most people skip, and the fix is cheap while the van is already open for something else. Custom build out work runs $5,000 to $80,000 for a full conversion, and correcting mounts, glands and cable routing on an existing build is a small fraction of that. We will quote it separately from any claim work so the two never get confused with each other.
One more observation from the bay: the builds that hold up best are the ones where somebody thought about water leaving. A gland with a drip loop, a galley with a drain path to the outside, a floor with a fall away from a cabinet. Water gets in eventually on every vehicle with holes in it, and the difference between a stain and a floor is whether there was somewhere for it to go.
