Three deck materials, three different failures
A hardwood deck is the traditional answer and still a good one: cheap, replaceable a board at a time, and forgiving of point loads because the timber spreads them. It fails by splitting at fastener holes and by rotting where end grain meets a steel rail. A steel deck is stronger and heavier and fails by corroding from underneath, usually at every fastener head where a coating was broken during installation. An aluminium deck is light and stiff and fails at the weld or extrusion joint rather than in the middle of a plank.
Repair strategy follows from that. Timber is replaced in boards and it is worth using the same species and thickness, because mixing them changes how the deck flexes. Steel is cut back to sound material and replaced. Aluminium is repaired at the joint with the correct process, since a poor weld on structural aluminium is weaker than the metal around it. Floor repair and replacement covering wood, aluminium and steel decks runs $500 to $9,500, four to forty hours.
The rack and the load are what actually bend the deck
A headache rack does two jobs: it protects the cab from a load that shifts forward and it gives somewhere to mount lights and straps. Both put load into the front of the deck, and the mounts are frequently bolted straight through the deck edge into a crossmember that was not designed for a moment load in that direction. What follows is cracking at the deck edge and a rack that develops a lean nobody notices until it is obvious.
Headache rack and cab guard install runs $750 to $3,500, four to fourteen hours, and doing it properly means picking up two crossmembers rather than one and spreading the load with a plate. The same principle applies to toolboxes, crane bases and anything else bolted to a deck. Toolbox and crane body install runs $1,500 to $10,000, ten to forty hours, and on a crane the mounting engineering is the entire job while the crane itself is a bolt on.
Stake pockets tell you how the truck has been loaded
Stake pockets are the honest record of how a flatbed has been used. Pockets that are spread, torn at the top edge, or reinforced with a previous repair say that side loads have exceeded what they were built for, either from cargo pressing outward or from straps pulled over a load with nothing spreading the tension. That is worth knowing before quoting anything, because repairing a pocket without addressing why it failed produces the same failure.
Stake sides themselves are usually timber or aluminium panels that live a rough life and are cheap to replace. The structural item is the rail the pockets are let into. Where that rail has deformed along its length, sectioning it is a frame repair rather than a body repair. Frame and structural welding runs $750 to $20,000, and on this class the low end of that band covers most pocket and rail work with the truck properly supported.
What a load shift does that a collision does not
A collision applies force from outside. A load shift applies it from inside, and the damage pattern is unmistakable once you have seen a few. Deck boards pushed up at one end. A stake pocket torn outward rather than inward. Crossmembers bent downward in a line rather than at one point. A headache rack pushed forward at its top. None of that looks like an impact and all of it is real structural damage, and it is frequently reported as though the truck was hit.
That distinction matters for a claim. Cargo shifting is usually a different coverage question from a collision, and the operator is better served by an accurate description than by a convenient one. Cosmetic and structural body inspection runs $250 to $600, one to three hours, and it is the right first step when nobody is sure what happened.
Corrosion on a deck that lives outside
A flatbed spends its whole life exposed. Rain sits on a deck, runs into every fastener hole, and finds the underside where nobody looks. On a steel deck that means corrosion radiating from each fastener head. On a timber deck it means end grain rot at the rail. On both it means crossmembers rusting from the top surface downward, which is the surface that never gets inspected because a deck is bolted over it.
The preventive answer is dull and effective: check fasteners annually, address a broken coating before it blooms, and replace a split board before it wets the crossmember below it. Rust treatment and anti corrosion coating runs $400 to $3,500, two to fourteen hours. Where a crossmember has lost section it gets replaced rather than coated, because coating thin steel makes it look better and does nothing for what the truck is carrying next week.
