Reefer and Insulated Body repair for Laguna Niguel owners

How an insulated panel is built and why the seal is everything

An insulated body panel is a sandwich: an outer skin, a foam core injected or laid up between it and an inner liner, and a perimeter frame tying the layers together. The foam does the insulating and the two skins keep it dry and give the panel its stiffness. Every fastener, every joint and every corner extrusion is a potential path into the core, and the panel only performs while all of them stay closed. There is no drainage inside a foam core and no way for moisture to leave once it is in.

The frame members and the corner extrusions are also thermal bridges, and a body that has been repaired without regard for them ends up with a cold spot that condenses on the outside. That is visible on a summer morning as a line of sweat down a body side, and it is diagnostic: it means the panel is conducting where it should be insulating. Why a puncture the size of a coin matters

A hand truck corner through a liner leaves a hole nobody would think about twice on a dry van. On an insulated body it is a route into the core, and the core will wick moisture away from it in every direction. Six months later the panel is heavier, the unit runs longer to hold temperature, and fuel consumption has climbed without anybody connecting the two. Weighing a suspect panel is not practical, so the diagnosis is a moisture meter and a thermal survey with the box cold.

The lesson operators take from this once and never forget is that liner damage gets repaired the week it happens. A patch bonded properly into a liner is a small job. A wet panel is a panel replacement, because there is no way to dry a closed cell foam core in situ and no honest repair that leaves the water in there. That is the single most useful thing on this page for anybody running a temperature controlled body.

Floors take the traffic and the floors are aluminium

Most insulated bodies use an extruded aluminium T rail floor: hollow sections that let air circulate under a pallet while carrying wheel loads. Those rails score, dent and eventually distort under pallet jack traffic, and a distorted rail stops the air moving where it was designed to move. Cold air that cannot circulate under a load produces a temperature difference across the box that the unit cannot fix by working harder.

Repairing an aluminium floor means sectioning rails and rewelding to a process suited to the alloy, with the insulation underneath protected from heat. It is slow and it is precise. Floor repair and replacement runs $500 to $9,500, and on an insulated body the higher part of that band is normal rather than exceptional because the floor is not just a surface, it is part of the sealed envelope holding the core dry.

The doors are where the cold actually leaves

A rear door on an insulated body seals on a compressible gasket around a frame, and the gasket only works while the door closes square against it. Hinges sag, the door drops a few millimetres, and the gasket stops compressing at the top corner. From then on the unit is fighting an air leak the driver cannot see, and the first symptom is a temperature record that will not hold at the top of the load.

Diagnosis is a torch inside a closed box on a bright day, looking for light around the seal line, and a strip of paper closed in the door at intervals to check compression. Roll up and swing door service runs $400 to $4,500, two to eighteen hours. Hinge and frame geometry gets corrected before a gasket is replaced, because a new gasket on a dropped door buys a few weeks and then reports the same fault.

What gets documented on a temperature controlled body

Operators in this space answer to customers and to auditors, so a repair has to leave a record. What we document on an insulated body repair is what was opened, what materials went in, whether any core was found wet and how much was replaced, and what the thermal survey showed at completion. That file goes with the vehicle. It is the evidence an operator needs when a customer asks why a body was off the road for a week.

Our scope stops at the body. The refrigeration unit itself, its refrigerant circuit and its controls belong with a refrigeration specialist, and we coordinate around that rather than working on it. Hazmat and disposal applies at $45 flat where refrigerant, chemicals or LP are involved. Where a unit has to come off a bulkhead so the bulkhead can be repaired, that removal and refit is scheduled with the operator so the unit is handled by the people who maintain it.
